Anakin saluted some clones as he hurriedly walked passed them. His legs took him directly to the bridge of the Negotiator where undoubtedly Obi-Wan would be with Cody and Rex. Exhaustion began seeping into his bones, the battle having dragged on longer than anyone would’ve expected. For a moment he felt grateful that he had left Ahsoka in command of his ship and the majority of the 501st while he and Rex led a small faction to aid the 212th. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust in her abilities, but amidst the chaos of this latest engagement, he could at least find comfort knowing that she was safe.
Anakin was too tired to debrief, but he would never admit it. Rounding the corner, he walked onto the bridge and his eyes automatically locked onto Obi-Wan’s familiar shape. Three steps closer and Anakin nearly stumbled over his own feet at the odd sight.
On the bridge, Obi-Wan stood in his usual attire, dirtied from war, but with a small furry lump tucked between the layers of his tunics, swaddled against his heart. The Jedi Master was absent-mindedly petting behind one of the animal’s triangular ears in a gentle, soothing motion as his gaze lifted from the datapad he and Cody were scrolling through to meet Anakin’s.
“Ah, there you are,” Obi-Wan greeted him. The corners of his mouth dipped slightly. “Anakin, you should get that gash on your head looked at.”
“Good to see you, too, Master.” Anakin walked closer until he was standing in front of him.
Obi-Wan’s eyes filled with concern as they surveyed the blood above Anakin’s temple. His hand stilled from the petting motion and he reached out to prod gently at the injury, then checking his fingertips to see whether the blood was still fresh.
“It’s probably not as bad as it looks,” Obi-Wan mumbled. His fingers brushed at the curls stuck to the blood on Anakin’s face, attempting to tuck them behind his ear. No one else on the bridge seemed to notice, and if they did, it wouldn’t have registered as out of the ordinary for Obi-Wan to be tending to his former Padawan with such care.
“I’ll have Kix look at it,” Anakin told him, placing a hand on Obi-Wan’s elbow to still his fussing. He peered down at the animal staring back at him. It looked feline. A face more pointed than that of a loth cat’s. Wide-set, almond shaped blue eyes. A tiny pink nose.
“Who’s your new friend?”
Rex snorted. A couple other clones glanced over their shoulders with amused looks, but no one offered an explanation so he cast a questioning glance at Obi-Wan. Anakin looked at him expectantly, raising an eyebrow, as Obi-Wan squirmed.
“As we were about to depart for the ship, we heard something crying,” Obi-Wan began slowly. “Very insistently crying. We followed the sound and found what was, or I suppose used to be, a den belonging to a feline species. It appeared that the mother and two of her kittens did not survive when part of the neighboring building collapsed. This little one,” he gestured with a tip of his head toward the small cat. “Well, we couldn’t leave him.”
“Him?” Anakin asked.
“We checked under the tail,” Rex supplied.
Anakin watched as Cody smiled and booped the gray striped kitten on the nose. Leaning in, Anakin looked at the little cat closely, a wave of empathy rising in his chest imagining how terrified and confused he must have been to have lost his only home, his mother, and his littermates. The cat probably watched his mother die. He couldn’t have been more than a couple pounds. With his gloved hand, Anakin reached out tentatively to pet the kitten only to be met with a guarded hiss. He quickly withdrew his hand.
