Summary: “Hello, Anakin,” Obi-Wan says, giving him a wary smile and forcing himself to walk around to the trunk of his car and pull out some luggage. “How was your second year of college?” He asks courteously, needing to think of anything else other than the way Anakin seems to glow.

“Oh it was great! It was hard too, but I had this mechanical engineering class—” Anakin starts chattering excitedly on so that Obi-Wan can’t even get a word in, but he doesn’t mind. It’s entertaining listening to Anakin talk about something he likes, and the way he lights up and shows so much expression is incredibly endearing, and Obi-Wan finds himself smiling before he realizes what he’s doing.

Oh, God, Obi-Wan thinks with a sinking stomach. This will be a very long week.

(Or, Obi-Wan has been a long-time family friend of the Skywalkers, but when Anakin starts thinking he has a chance to seduce his pseudo-uncle, Obi-Wan is worried that everything will begin to crumble apart. And that he won't be able to resist giving in.)

Obi-Wan ducks back into the driver's seat of his car and slams the door behind him, before buckling his seatbelt with one hand while the other quickly unlocks his phone. He has a text from Qui-Gon waiting for him: Will you be here soon?

Qui-Gon is the closest thing Obi-Wan has to a father now; he hosted him when Obi-Wan first came to the states for his graduate program and continued to be a great friend when Obi-Wan moved here officially to pursue his career. He’s supportive and kind and has been extremely helpful in the last decade or so of Obi-Wan’s life, but also like a father, he thinks he knows what’s best for him.

Obi-Wan glances at the time and estimates how much longer it will be until he arrives at his destination. ETA 6:15, he texts back, and puts his phone down to start the car back up. When he checks the screen again Qui-Gon has replied.

This will be a nice break for you, Obi-Wan.

Obi-Wan doesn’t bother to reply, just puts the car into drive and exits out of the gas station he’d stopped at. Qui-Gon was so adamant about him coming along to the annual stay at the Skywalker beach house this year, and Obi-Wan doesn’t know why he even finally agreed in the first place. He likes the Skywalkers very much and they have become like family to him because of their close friendship with Qui-Gon, so Obi-Wan has gotten to know them well over the years from association. But there is only one problem: Anakin Skywalker.

Anakin is Shmi Skywalker’s son, and he and Obi-Wan had been quite close over the years. But it got to a point when Anakin reached sixteen that it started being a bit awkward, to where he felt like he needed to pull away and not be so friendly with the boy. And then he’d turned eighteen and everything had gone downhill. He’d suspected that Anakin had a crush on him for years at that point, but just thought it would go away as he got older like those sorts of things do, as he got to meet more people his own age rather than just Obi-Wan who’s sixteen years his senior.

But it hasn’t seemed to go away, and Anakin . . . now he tries to act on it. Obi-Wan still distinctly remembers the first time he realized Anakin was a man now and that he was attractive—it was the summer before Anakin started college and he was staying at Obi-Wan’s place for a few days before he moved into his dorm, and Obi-Wan had been blessed—no, cursed—with the sight of Anakin dripping wet in nothing but a towel slung low on his hips or in tiny shorts and a shirt that seemed purposefully too small, his body tanned and toned but still gangly and with a hint of baby fat. And he would give Obi-Wan those little grins like he knew exactly what he was doing, and Obi-Wan had no doubt that he did.
