While most kids were out trick or treating on the brisk Halloween evening, and most adults were staying at home to regulate their kids and scan their candy for razor blades, most college students were either throwing or attending wild house parties, getting blackout drunk and banging each other in revealing Halloween costumes.

But not all of them. Randy's house party was on the calmer side. Instead of the wild all night rompers happening in the fraternity houses nearby, the party at Randy's place was more of a gathering of friends. The people there had made the decision that they just wanted to spend the evening having a good time with their friends and peers, and that they wanted to actually remember the evening the following morning.

It was a small party, about 30 people. Some people played Foosball in the corner, some lounged on the couches in the living room holding bottles of beer, and some sat bundled up with blankets in popcorn watching Netflix in the back room. Casual conversation filled the air, and music played softly in the background.

In what could be considered the middle of the house, leaning against the banister of the staircase, stood Abigail, a girl with long curly brown hair. She was dressed as a construction worker, browsing through her phone. Eventually, her friend, Karen, a girl with a long dark ponytail, walked up to her. Karen was dressed as Supergirl, and she held a bottle of coca cola.

"Jeff says he can get the xbox up and running again," Karen told Abigail, stopping by her friends side.

"Of course he says that," Abigail remarked with a smirk. "That's the same thing he said about your bike. I think he has a crush on you, Karen."

"He does not!" Karen scoffed. But then she looked away, appearing to blush a little as she took a sip of her soda. Her phone chimed, and she looked down and pulled it out of her Supergirl skirt, grateful for the distraction. She unlocked it and read the notification on her screen.

"Oh, Mia just texted she's here," she said.

"Who's Mia again?" Abigail asked, frowning. "Oh wait... is she that quiet girl? The one that barely ever says anything?"

"Well, yes," Karen said. She looked up at Abigail. "Go easy on her, Abs. She was homeschooled for a long time growing up, so she has a hard time being social. But she's a good person."

"I'm sure she is," Abigail shrugged, "it's just hard to tell when she doesn't say or do anything at all." She took a deep breath and then smiled at her dark haired companion. "But I think you're a good person for being friends with her, Karen."

"Well I've known her since we were 17," Karen replied. "And believe it or not, she's actually really nice."

They both turned and looked at the entrance of the house as the front door opened.

Mia walked in. She paused to close the door behind her, and then turned to face the rest of the house. Her brown eyes scanned the party, and her hands clutched her handbag in front of her. She was cute, really cute, but in a modest way. She looked like someone who had no idea how pretty they were, like she spent so much time studying and reading that she didn't notice the way other people looked at her.

Mia was kind of small, and her body had subtle but enticing curves. Her straight brown hair was short, in a cute bob cut that ended above her shoulders. Although her pretty face often brightened up with a cute but shy smile, Mia seemed completely unaware of her good looks, and any people that tried to make a move on her were confounded by her reserved and quiet personality. She usually didn't talk much, and rarely attracted attention, preferring to sit by herself in a corner somewhere with a good book.
