It was a large space, darker than the outside, with golden rays of sunlight that shone through the windows and the cracks between the wooden planks of the walls. It certainly didn't look like any stable Liam had seen. There were what looked like two rows of high thin wooden tables running from the back to the front, and between the two rows sat what looked like a large metal container with an open top. The metal container had a ramp made of wood running up to one end. There was also a number of wooden boxes piled against the walls, and on the right hand wall hung a bunch of riding equipment. The floor was plain dirt, with patches of hay here and there.
While it was true that the place wasn't covered in dung, Melissa's reassurance that there was only a "little bit of poop" seemed like a bit of an understatement. Near the metal container thing in the middle of the area was a massive pile of feces, similar to the one they'd encountered on the path the day before. And to the right was another gargantuan pile, which by the looks of it had somehow been sprayed against the right hand wall. Flies buzzed frantically through the air inside, and from the moment Melissa had opened the door enough to see inside, the smell of manure had hit Liam like a warm tsunami wave. He was sure that no normal horse could ever make a pile even close to the size of the ones he was supposed to be cleaning up.
"Alright!" Melissa chirped happily. "See that metal container? That's a part of one of our manure processing units. Normally, we'd fill up a couple of wheelbarrows, take the poop over to the other building, and dump them one of these metal things, which is connected to the rest of the processing machine. Then fertilizer comes out of the other end! Of course, we're not going to make you walk all the way over there. So just scoop up the poop, walk your wheelbarrow up the ramp, dump it in the processing unit feeder, and you're done!"
"That's all you have to do," Olivia said. She walked the wheelbarrow over to him, set it down with a thunk, looked at the poop piles, and then gave him a smile. "Better get to work!"
Melissa walked up to him and held out the scooper. As he took it, she suddenly stepped closer, so that their faces were barely a foot apart.
"I hope you slip and fall in the shit," she said quietly, with a huge grin. Then she turned around and marched away, her hips swaying with her steps, pausing only to call out "Just kidding!" over her shoulder and give him an exaggerated wink.
Liam sighed to himself. Scooper in hand, he grabbed the wheelbarrow and wheeled it over to the first pile of poop.
He didn't really appreciate how horrible it was until he got up close. Countless chunks of poop, like large soft brown rocks, piled together, along with smaller pieces and softer poop that was more dissolved, all in what he was pretty sure was a massive puddle of piss. Flies buzzed this way and that, and the smell was like a physical presence. It took him effort to breathe; he struggled to deal with the strong earthy stench. He hadn't seen any horse poop that looked remotely like this.
He glanced at Melissa and Olivia. They were standing together, off to the side. Olivia was whispering something in Melissa's ear, and Melissa was watching Liam, laughing silently with her hand covering her mouth.
His face burning, Liam turned back to the pile of feces. He stood as close to the piss and shit soaked dirt as he dared, and carefully bent forwards while moving the scooper towards the pile, knowing that if he lost his balance and fell, Melissa and Olivia would probably just laugh even harder at him.
He slid the wide shovel under the massive pile and scooped up the first scoop. The feces was softer than he thought it would be, perhaps because it had been marinated in piss. It disintegrated as the scoop lifted up through it, chunks of poop falling from the scooper and splattering back on to the pile. Maybe it was just his imagination, but it seemed like disturbing the poop had sent a second wave of the stench his way, and he suppressed a gag. He moved the scoop over to the wheelbarrow and turned it over, and the poop poured in with sickeningly soft thuds.
