After skimming through my closet, I realized I didn’t have anything that wasn’t agent looking. I grabbed a black dress shirt and a dark blue blazer. I left on the dress pants I was wearing, they matched with the dress shirt. I unbuttoned the top two buttons of the dress shirt, It was really the only way not to look like an agent. I stood in front of my mirror for a few minutes, running through my limited option of what to do with my hair. I decided to leave it natural but mess with it just a little to add some texture.

I pulled a book off of my bed, it was the russian translation of a classic that Spencer always talked about. I put a note in the back of the book, it was kind of long but I said everything I wanted to. I wrote about how I feel about him, and I asked him to be my boyfriend at the end of it. I was always awkward about asking people out, but this was the easiest way for me to do it without being embarrassed.

He mentioned something a few months ago about wanting the russian translation but not being able to find it anywhere, and I just so happened to have a copy. A knock on my door broke me out of my remembrance of the interaction and I jogged down my stairs. My sister was standing with her hands folded together on one side of the chess board, she looked super serious. I peered out of the peephole and opened the door, Spencer showed up a lot earlier then I thought he would.

“Sorry for not messaging you first, my phone died and I just decided to charge it in my car.”
“It’s okay Spence.”
“Spence?” My sister called from the other room.
“Is that your sister?” He asked.
“Yes it is. My mom will be back in a little bit, she was picking some stuff up from the store.”

“That’s fine.”
“Oh, before I forget, here.” I said, handing him the book.
“Where did you find this?” He smiled, sliding the book into his satchel.
“I had a copy of it that I found like 3 weeks ago when I was cleaning out my house.”
“Thank you. I didn’t bring you a gift but-”

“You don’t have to Spencer, it’s not like I read anyway, plus your birthday is in 2 months so just think of it as a really early birthday present.”
“Oh so you remember your boyfriend's birthday but not mine? I’m gonna throw a brick at you for your birthday.” Holly said, walking into my entryway.
“I know your birthday Holly.”
“Do you? Cause you didn’t call me or give me anything this year.”
“I was busy sister, you know that.”

She narrowed her eyes at me and then shot a glance at Spencer.

“You’re 6’1. Maybe 150 pounds and you're wearing contacts. He really is a nerd.”
“How did you- Holly, did you google him?” I asked, my mouthing falling open.

Spencer looked proud of her and a chuckle escaped his lips as he looked at me.

“No, I just looked at him. It’s not hard to tell how much someone weighs or how tall they are, especially when they are standing next to someone you know the proportions and stuff of.”
“You never told me your sister was also a nerd.” He joked.

“That’s because she’s never done this before. She’s a cheerleader with a C average, I didn’t think she even knew the difference between active and passive voice, let alone… whatever it was she just did.”

“Well I played basketball. Being sporty-”
“You coached. You didn’t play.”
“That’s not important.” He said. “But, being sporty doesn’t mean that you’re dumb, especially considering most athletes have to have a C average to stay on the sport they play, they just usually keep the C average by cheating.”
“I like him. He doesn’t seem like he gets many guys or girls, so I doubt he could cheat, even if he wanted to. But he seems like a good guy.” She said, analyzing him.

She did this with Mason, but never my second boyfriend. I think after Mason cheated she felt that she encouraged him to cheat on me, but she seemed rather confident in her deduction of Spencer. I hoped she was right.
