"I'm fine!"
"You're not fine!"
"But I just-" Seeing the furious and yet concerned look on his face, Charlie stopped arguing and looked out of the window instead, staring at the snown falling to the already white ground.
She had gotten to known her best friend well enough to know when he wouldn't talk and now was one of those times. If he wanted to act like a five years old giving a silent treatment, he could do that. Charlie had more important things to worry about.
This wasn't what she had expected when she had told Asher that she had passed out at work which was scary, that she couldn't deny but as the nurses and even the doctor had explained, she was fine. The baby was fine. She just had to eat more and keep an eye on the blood pressure, that's all.
And maybe the doctor mentioned bed rest. This was why Charlie had thought about not mentioning this to anyone, not even her parents. She knew that it would only freak them out and make them worried which would only make them overreact to everything she did during the rest of the pregnancy.
But when Asher had asked her to hang out tomorrow, she had to mention that she was pretty much forced to rest at home. And oh boy, did he get worried.
At first, he had asked a bunch of questions and it took her many minutes to get him to realize that nothing too serious had happened and that both she and the baby were alright. They were lucky to survive with a warning. While talking, Asher started driving to the hospital to see her and even volunteered to get her home.
Realizing that it meant not having to call her parents, Charlie had agreed. Her friend had immediately hugged her and asked even more questions from her and the nurse before doing the same with the doctor. He was like a concerned baby daddy, it was kind of cute even though she was very overwhelmed by it all.
Something changed when they got in the car, though. No longer was he asking questions about her health or if she was feeling better. The opposite, actually. Now he had been mostly quiet, only asking a few times whether the seat was good and stuff like that. Other than that, Asher had just focused on driving and almost avoided looking at her.
If she didn't know better, Charlie would assume that he was angry at her which didn't make any sense. It's not like she made herself pass out at work. A little kindness wouldn't harm anyone. Yes, she was very grateful that he had come to check up on her and even drove her home but how this ride had gone was making her a little uncomfortable.
Putting her hand on her stomach to feel her babygirl kicking healthy, Charlie had to ask. "What's wrong? Are you okay?"
"Yeah," Asher said shortly, not looking at her.
"Then why aren't you looking at me?" she frowned, getting tired of his attitude. She hadn't seen him behaving this way toward her before and all this cold, almost uncaring attitude went straight to her heart.
Asher turned to look at her and just stared at her for about five seconds without saying anything or showing any kind of emotion on his face. "Because if I look at you then I'm gonna shout at you and you don't need that right now. So I'm waiting until later."
"Shout at me? For what? Passing out? Having to leave my work?" Charlie frowned confused, not understanding where this was coming from. She had liked the other side of Asher that he had only shown to her. The one that gave hugs and asked concerned questions without shouting.
Taking a deep breath, Asher tightened his hold on the steering wheel so much that it was a miracle that it didn't leave a mark. Then he started to explain with a shaking voice, still not looking at her.
