While waiting for his brother and Aurora, Fabian stepped away to the waiting room, immediately feeling guilty for leaving the girls alone to make a phone call.
Just because he hadn't had time or even interest to talk with anyone on the phone, that didn't mean that his phone hadn't been spammed with texts and calls.
Since he told everyone at work not to bother him unless it was a life or death situation, most of them had come from Nora and his parents. A few messages came from Noelle who was curious about the baby.
Yes, he was guilty for not taking into account his fiancé and her feelings when had spent the night in here, not even telling her where he was at. The only thing he had texted her was not to expect him at home last night because of work.
Although he was known to work a lot, he hadn't spent the whole night and the next morning working. And Nora wasn't stupid and she must have known that even Fabian hadn't worked twenty-two hours straight.
He wouldn't even blame her if she accused him for cheating even though it wasn't even close to what he had done yesterday. Sex wasn't the first thing on his mind while helping Charlie during labor and just being there for her during this time.
Although, he hadn't not thought about it. That's why Fabian had finally made a decision that he should have made a long time ago, starting with Nora.
"Finally! Where the hell have you been? And with whom?" That was the first thing she said before he could even greet her. As expected, she sounded furious, confused, and, worst of all, worried. That worry made him feel like the biggest dickhead in the world.
"I'm sorry, something came up and my... friend needed my help and I just... accidentally fell asleep here," that wasn't technically a lie, "I know I should have called you. I'm so sorry, it's been crazy in here."
There was silence for a few seconds until she talked again, this time with a softer, calmer voice. "Is everything okay? What friend? Noelle? Diego? Are they okay?"
Since he didn't have many friends, real friends and not the ones she had invited to his birthday party, it wasn't a miracle that she could only mention two by name. And she was right, they had been and still were the only friends he was still in contact with.
Fabian hesitated, wondering what to say without having to lie too much even though he knew that she would only overreact to the truth. "Yes, they're okay. Now. I'll be okay soon and tell you more but it's gonna take a while to figure everything out. Then... we should talk about something."
Another silence. "About what?"
Us. You. Me. How I could never be happy with you. How wrong this is.
"I'll tell you the details later but I just... I have thought about things lately. About a lot of things," Fabian mumbled, not wanting to do this over the phone.
"What things? Me? Are you breaking up with me?" Apparently, she disagreed and clearly decided to do this over the phone.
"No! I mean... not exactly but I just..." Oh god, why was it suddenly so hot in here? He was sweating. Fabian had assumed that he had time to make a plan and figure out what to say because that was what he always did. That was how he dealt with different situations.
Not only did Nora deserve a good, well-thought break-up instead of this awkward mumbling on the phone but even in this, Fabian had to think about how this would affect his parents too, especially his father.
Obviously, they would be disappointed and even angry about his decision but if he managed to make this break-up as good as possible and make Nora understand why this was necessary then maybe, just maybe, they would also understand his reasoning.
