He had never seen anyone that tiny. The baby could have probably fit in his palm. God, how beautiful she was! The perfect copy of her mother! He was certain that Charlie's baby photos looked a lot like her.

While Fabian appreciated the baby's beauty, Charlie's attention was somewhere else. "Why isn't she crying? Is she okay? Please don't tell me that she's..."

Unable to finish that sentence, she started to cry immediately and he quickly wrapped his arms around her because he realized the same: babies were supposed to cry. She didn't do that, hell, she barely looked like she was breathing in the doctor's arms.

His heart dropped when he realized that maybe their worst nightmare had come alive. She wouldn't survive that, he already knew that. Charlie was strong as hell and she had already gone through some horrible things despite her young age but that would be too much even for her.

Shaking in fear, Fabian tried to get another glance at the baby but the doctor quickly turned around with her still in his arms and took a towel from somewhere behind him, and wrapped the baby in it.

Then he started to rub her back, doing it over and over again for almost a minute until there it was, the cry of a newborn baby that had to be, in that moment, the most beautiful voice in the world. He had never felt more relieved in his entire life.

"We need to get her to the NICU as soon as possible, go prepare it for me please," the doctor told the midwife who immediately ran out of the room. NICU? That was meant only for serious cases, right? For when babies need more care and treatment?

"She has some trouble breathing and I don't know if her lungs have still developed well enough despite the injection. We need to put her on the ventilator as soon as possible. She's also very thin. I'm so sorry, Charlie, but I promise I'll do my best for her," the doctor promised but she probably didn't even hear it due to her loud sobbing in his arms.

"Can I hold her? Please?" Charlie asked with red, puffy eyes, holding her hands to get her baby.

Unfortunately, the doctor shook his head but at least he walked closer so that Charlie could at least get a good look at her daughter before she was taken away from her. Fabian understood it because it sounded like she needed oxygen.

Looking at her, Fabian whispered a little prayer and wished more than anything that he could change places with her. She was just two minutes old, it wasn't fair that she was already forced to fight for her life.

While the doctor and the midwife told Charlie to rest and wait until later to see her daughter, Charlie didn't want to wait even a second. So she had forced him to help her up from the delivery bed and then she had to take a break to even sit there and just breathe, get used to how her body worked so soon after just giving birth.

While holding her hands, Fabian helped her up from the bed and slowly but surely, followed the doctor who would show where the NICU was in this hospital and more importantly, where they had gotten her child.

Charlie's walking was slow and she had to take short breaks to catch a breath which was another sign that perhaps she should have waited longer than five minutes after the birth to start walking. But since it was about her newborn baby who she barely got time to see before they had to take her to the NICU, Fabian understood the hurry.

"Fuck it," he whispered and in a second, he managed to get her in his arms so that he was carrying her almost like a bride. Almost like they were newlyweds on their way to meet their child.

"What? No, stop this, Fabi! I just gave birth, I must be so heavy! You can't carry me like this!" As beautiful as her body was still, it was very visible that there was still some of the weight that didn't just magically disappear once the baby was out.
