He would never forgive his parents for doing this to him. Not only had they lied to him about a lunch with a new business partner in New York who ended up being Nora but they also lied to her too about his intentions!
To say that he was shocked to see Nora waiting for him in the restaurant was an understatement and he was ready to leave immediately. Then she had somehow made him to stay and listen because he owned her one. At that moment, he couldn't disagree so he sat down.
While she talked about being able to forgive him and start over, Fabian's mind and heart were back in Boston with Charlie and the girls.
He would have to find a way to earn her forgiveness. He had fucked up yesterday when she had called but for his defense, his mind had been all over the place after his parents had pretty much commanded him to break up with her or else...
Yes, he had avoided Charlie and even talked with her on purpose to get more time to deal with that without totally blowing up his career. That was a dick move, especially because he knew that she could worry but apparently, she had even called Asher in tears to ask if he had heard anything about Fabian and if something had happened to him.
God, he loathed himself. Charlie deserved much, much better than someone like him who still wasn't brave enough to stand up for his parents and simply tell them that they were wrong. The least every boyfriend had to do was defend their girlfriend and he hadn't done that.
That had to be the reason why they arranged this ridiculous lunch with his ex-fiancé. Sure, she was beautiful and they had some great time together but especially compared to Charlie, that woman was boring as fuck. He could have never been happy with her. Thankfully, he had learned that before the wedding with the help of Charlie.
After Nora started to talk about where they should have their first vacation together to have a fresh start, he had to interrupt her. "I'm sorry Nora but there won't be any vacation. I think there's been a misunderstanding and I'm sure that my parents told you some things but I'm not single. I'm in a relationship with a woman I love."
Nora looked shocked, staring at him with wide eyes. "You are? But your parents told me that you could be interested in starting over. Is this some kind of sick joke to you? Embarrass me like this?"
Feeling sympathy for a woman, he couldn't help but squeeze her hand on the table. "No, nothing like that. I didn't plan this or say anything about you to my parents. They just... don't like her, for some reason. I never wanted to hurt you, I promise. You deserve someone better than me and you'll find him. You're a great woman but just not for me."
In the past, when they had been still engaged, she had gotten on his nerves every goddamn day and he had often thought about how little he had wanted to be with her. But she wasn't a monster and there were some things about her that he liked.
"Is this about her? The woman you were rumored to date and have secret babies with? Your parents told me that it's not true. And I believed that! Did you fucking cheat on me and had kids with someone else? Oh god, this is so humiliating. I thought that she was just some gold digger who tries to date a rich millionaire like you," Nora cried out, hiding her face behind her hands.
"No, no, I never cheated on you. They're not mine but... I wish that they were," Fabian smiled sadly, heart aching with pain when he remembered that Charlie was angry with him.
"Well, I see that this is going nowhere so let me swallow my pride and walk away before anything else happens. But please, don't drag me into your family drama anymore!" Saying that, Nora closed her eyes for a second, took a deep breath and then smiled that wide, fake smile that he had seen so many times in the past.
