"What's going on?"

This wasn't the first time she had asked that from Fabian who never gave any real answer. Instead, he changed the subject to something irrelevant such as the way Juliet smiled, which she usually loved to talk about but not tonight.

He was up to something, she knew it. Why else would he have forced her and the girls out of the apartment, talking about what great weather it was and how stupid it was to waste it inside and so on.

Before she knew it, he had already grabbed Aurora and Juliet in his arms and dressed them up so they were good to go. For some reason, he was in a hurry to leave but she couldn't figure out what was so important about this park that they had to leave in that very second.

It wasn't even that but also the fact that Fabian had asked a few days ago if she was free to hang out today and that they had to do it at 1pm and not a minute later. It was as if he was planning some surprise, almost like a birthday party. That didn't make any sense, though, because her birthday wasn't in another two months.

Hell, she - no, both of them as he had demanded to be part of it - still had Aurora's birthday party coming up. They had managed to plan something and invite people who had all agreed to come even at such short notice.

However, there were some disagreements about what they should have at that party. For some reason, Fabian had insisted that they would have a bouncy castle and magicians and princesses and so many other things while she had preferred to keep it simple. They had even fought about it once.

"Why are you being so difficult?" Fabian had asked after she had rejected his ideas. They were sitting in the living room, it was 9 pm and the children were busy sleeping in the other rooms.

They had been making a list of what to do and get for the party and ever since they started that, she had had to explain this over and over again.

Perhaps she sounded ungrateful or even mean but she had made up her mind. They didn't need a bouncy castle or a magician or ten princesses or their amusement park as he had suggested.

She was two! It was good enough if she stayed awake longer than half an hour but Fabian didn't seem to understand that sometimes, people could be spoiled a little too much. And she most definitely wasn't old enough to appreciate or even enjoy magicians even if it was dumb getting-the-bun-out-of-the-hat tricks.

"I'm being difficult? Who's the one calling every toy store in the United States to ask what is their shipping time?" Charlie rolled her eyes.

"Why is it a bad thing that I want to give her the best birthday, huh? That she's gonna have fun?" Fabian frowned, clearly not understanding her point of view.

"She can and she will have fun even without all of those, Fabi. Do you know why? Because she's a child and children can find joy even in the simplest things," she explained. "But we can talk about this later, okay? I don't wanna fight."

"Okay," he smiled, and kissed her quickly before hugging her.

If she had closed her eyes, Charlie would have never seen him adding a bouncy castle to the cart in the laptop. "Fabian!"

Although they had kissed a few more times lately, neither had started the conversation about what it meant or if it even meant anything. They were just kissing without any promises or commitments or relationship drama.

To be honest, she hated it. The longer that they went without the conversation and promises and commitments - or a rejection because that was possible too - the more nervous she became.
