Something was wrong.

She had noticed it immediately after hearing her daughter cry in the middle of the night. It wasn't that she hadn't cried bloody murder before but somehow this was different. It was almost as if Juliet was in pain and that the crying was her way to ask for help.

Any other day she would immediately try to relax her, feed her, or change her diaper which were the most typical reasons for her tears. Today, however, Charlie didn't do any of that because her first instinct was to go straight to the hospital.

Her baby was burning up and when she checked the fever, it showed 104.2°F. That was high for any baby and even an older child but for someone with Juliet's health, Charlie had panicked and almost had a breakdown.

For one month, they had been mostly healthy with weekly doctor appointments and many, many different kinds of medication every morning and evening. It killed her to give them to Juliet who fought back each time but if it kept her baby healthy and alive, it had to be done.

Although everyone had been preparing them for the worst from doctors to nurses to family members, Charlie had been hopeful that they would be the lucky ones without any serious health problems. That her daughter wouldn't have to suffer anymore so young. That they could get to even two months without an emergency.

She should have known better, though, because when had their family ever been lucky? Now her baby was screaming and crying and suffering in her arms, begging for her mother to make it better. The fact Aurora had just woken up and kept asking for Juliet to be quiet didn't help at all.

Hearing that, Charlie blinked and woke up from the internal panic. Now wasn't the time to just stand and worry. "Baby, she's very sick. I have to get her to the hospital... but first I'll have to call there just in case." While trying to relax Juliet, Charlie kept an eye on Aurora who wasn't in the mood to go back to sleep even though it was 4am.

Then she called to the hospital and the woman she talked with managed to calm her down enough to explain the situation as well as Juliet's history born seven weeks too early and staying in the NICU. The woman told her to calm down and get to the hospital as fast as possible for the doctor's checkup.

It was right then that she remembered Fabian and how he might want to know that Juliet had to go to the hospital because of the fever. For so many times, he had stayed the night and slept on the couch and helped with the girls during days and nights and nothing like this had ever happened.

The one time they had agreed that he would have to sleep at his own home was when Juliet had a high fever and she was all alone. It had to be the karma for something she had done in the past. Maybe for not being the mother that the girls deserved.

Yes, she could easily call him and ask for a ride and help and a shoulder to cry on but the thing was, she couldn't do that. Not today. He had an important meeting early in the morning which was the reason he had to go home in the first place.

Fabian had even argued about it because what if something happened and he wasn't here to help? What if they needed him in case they needed to go somewhere fast such as the hospital? What if the girls screamed the whole night and she needed the rest?

"Don't be silly, nothing will happen. Now, leave and go to sleep, you're gonna need it. I'll call you tomorrow and ask how you killed that meeting," she had chuckled, kissed his cheek, and basically threw him out of the door.

Charlie still didn't regret making him go sleep in his own house because he needed some private time and sleep, away from them even for a day. But it would have been nice to have someone here now and help her deal with this scary, unknown situation where her baby's life was at risk. Again.
