That day it was quite hard hiding my nostalgia but apparently no one noticed. Mostly because I kept telling them I was tired, so they didn't get worried.
The day passed by really quickly and I didn't really payed attention to what the guys were doing.
After dinner I headed to the little stream. It was a beautiful night and I just sat there listening to the sound of the water flowing.
I heard someone coming close and sitting next to me.
"Hey" he said. It was Michael.
"Uh hi Mike" I said. Why was he here?
"I, uh, noticed you were a bit sad today"
"No, I'm just t-"
"I know it's not that. Do you wanna talk about it?" He asked kindly.
Wow. Out of all the people, he was the only one knowing I was not ok. I felt like I could tell him anything, so I hoped talking about it would relieve the weight off my chest.
"I guess..." I said slowly.
"Is it anything we did?" He sounded slightly worried.
"No, no. You guys are awesome. I just... miss someone. I don't want to forget and at the same time I can't help but wish I didn't remember." My voice cracked a bit, so I waited a few seconds before starting to talk again.
"Michael, do you... do you miss anyone?"
He slipped an arm around my shoulder and took a deep breath.
"Of course I do. My whole family is in Australia right now and knowing I won't be able to see them for a year is awful."
But he was certain to see them one day.
"How do you deal with it?"
"I just keep busy. I do what I love and hang out with the boys." He stopped for a while. Then started talking again,
"But there are days where every little thing reminds me of my parents or relatives. Like, a certain movement, a giggle, a joke. It is hard but you have to stay strong and wait until you can see them again". He pulled me closer and carefully asked me, "can I ask you who this person is?"
Oh boy, here we go. I didn't want to cry so I spoke carefully, as if crossing a fragile bridge paying attention to which spot to put my foot on, not wanting to break down.
"It's my brother. I used to have this brother named Connor and I haven't seen him for three years. Now I have no clue about where he is. He was, like, my best friend"
He started rubbing my back as a few tears inevitably rolled down my cheeks and I leant my head on his shoulder.
After a while we were in that position, he spoke softly "If you need help trying to find him, I'm always here. I hate seeing you upset"
I smiled and thanked him. I spent three years trying to find him, but apparently he had changed his surname, so there was no way I could find him.
But in that moment, Michael made me feel secure and let hope spread into my heart again. It was just something about him that made me want to believe his words.
Now it was plain night, and a cold breeze hit us. I shivered and he noticed. Without saying a word, he took his jacket off and put it on my shoulders. It was a really classy move and I smiled thanking him.
He returned my smile and pulled me closer.
We stayed there talking about anything and nothing, until we decided it was time to go to sleep.
I gave him the jacket back and entered my tent. Rydel was already asleep and I somehow managed not to wake her up.
I guess I had just found a best friend.
