It had been exactly two weeks since Graham showed up at Theseus compartment minutes later after Cassie's departure.
It had been two weeks since anyone had set their sights in her.
Theseus had been away from her for longer periods of time, yet this time he couldn't shake that dreadful feeling from his bones. Something was wrong. Her radio silence was just too... silent. He didn't know how to put it into words but ... that feeling that settled deep inside of him wouldn't go away.
For the love of God, he had been held captive in a seemingly inescapable prison, yet here he stood as a free man. He had been to Hogwarts in his life more times than he could count, but this time everything felt out of place. That comforting sense that made the Wizarding School so unique left him bare and on edge.
Minerva had been a bundle of nervous energy when she heard the news, also having to run the school on her own for a few days. Cass would have been extremely proud of her best friend at the moment, if she could she would have been waving banners bearing her name and yelling left and right "that's my best friend". Thomas on the other hand did exactly that. Strutting in the long halls, trailing after Minerva like a lost puppy and telling the students that "this is my future damn wife". Overall it was normal behaviour for him that no one even bated an eye. Theseus couldn't comprehend how Thomas was managing to run the French Auror office while also pestering Minerva, maybe it was one of those lazy days and he did dissappear for periods of time and reappearing for a few minutes before he was gone again. Just to annoy her.
He wished desperately to be in his place. Trailing after his Cass, hearing her snap back at him because he "breathed down her neck" or something along the lines. He missed his routine, wake up, go to work,do something, annoy Cass, joke around with Thomas, work some more and then go home. It was a bit monotonous but he loved it all the same. There was some strange comfort in that lifestyle and probably it was because his loved ones were always with him or the fact that not many things changed since his Hogwards days. Probably that was why he was nostalgic of the good old days, now that he walked along those walls again. He was sentimental like that.
Everything would go back to normal again he just knew it, or more accurately hoped. Lately he had been dreaming of a small girl with his wild dark curls and Cassie's face, how it used to be when he first met her. Their daughter possibly, or at least a possible version of her. The baby girl couldn't be more than three years old and looked at him with such wonder that he could actually feel his heart melt. She didn't talk much and simply asked him to read her stories to help her fall asleep, the books were always blank and he had to make up stories to satisfy her. She wore huge wire framed glasses that slipped down her nose constantly and covered almost half of her face. Her giggles resembled those of his brother when he used to read to him when he was smaller and Theseus could see on her many of his characteristics, his smile, his curls, his freckles despite her more Mediterranean skin complex. He was never before more desperate to make a dream come true. He wondered if that was a message, something to elevate the pain or if it was a glimpse of the future.
A bell chime was what drew him out of his thoughts and he headed towards the Room of Requirements, where Dumbledore was waiting for them. With a deep breath he tried to calm his mind he entered the room and multiple identical suitcases came into view. Newt's case, the one he hid all of his animals. The plan was simple enough, grab a suitcase, don't open it, guard it with your life, and make sure you have them until the election would take place. Simple, yeah right.
His mind was racing as he walked the streets of Bhutan. People around him were celebrating not knowing what was going to happen in a few short hours. It turned out he didn't have the Qilin, yet the dread that sat in his stomach was still present. He had been in many missions before, both as an Auror and as a soldier, but he couldn't calm his mind, his intuition had never been wrong before and the moment Grindelwald stepped into the open space he knew why. Because there she stood behind Grindelwald with chains in her arms. Her face was filled with cuts and bruises and his heart squeezed painfully in his chest.
What had happened to her? She was fine a few weeks ago. He should have never let her out of his arms that night.
