The night was eerily quiet, the kind of silence that heightened Yuvika's awareness of her surroundings. She lay in the middle of the large bed, in the room she and Rudraksh shared, but tonight, she was alone. Rudraksh had left for Bangkok that afternoon, his presence lingering in the space, but the bed felt too large without him.
Yuvika stared at the ceiling, feeling the weight of the emptiness beside her. Despite the plush pillows and the soft glow of the bedside lamp casting warm hues around the room, something felt off. It wasn't just that Rudraksh wasn't there; it was the unsettling awareness of the threats she knew were lurking around them.
Rudraksh had been firm about her safety before leaving. His voice, as he held her hand and made her promise to stay alert, still echoed in her mind. He had tightened security around her, instructing the guards to keep an even closer eye on her. He'd even made her wear a discreet security bracelet on her wrist, one designed to signal any distress with a touch of her fingers. She had rolled her eyes at it earlier, teasing him for being overly cautious, but now she was glad she had it.
The darkness outside the windows loomed as the wind brushed the curtains, making them sway lightly. She took a deep breath, trying to focus on the normal sounds of the house- distant footsteps of the guards stationed around the villa, the soft hum of air conditioning- but her mind was on high alert.
The threats Rudraksh had warned her about, the ones he didn't go into detail about but made sure she knew enough to be on guard, felt more real in the silence. Every creak, every slight movement outside the window, made her tense, despite the security team he'd placed around the villa.
As the minutes ticked by, Yuvika couldn't shake the feeling of being watched. She knew it was irrational-the house was surrounded by a private security team, the guards trained to protect her at all costs. Yet, it didn't stop her heart from racing. The empty spot on the bed beside her was a reminder of Rudraksh's absence, and she wished more than anything he was here.
Her eyes drifted to the chair near the window, where Rudraksh often sat late at night, working on his laptop. She could almost picture him there, dressed in his usual crisp shirt, his brow furrowed in concentration. He had a way of making her feel safe, just by being in the room. His calm, composed presence was something she leaned on more than she had realised.
Yuvika shifted, pulling the duvet tighter around herself, trying to shake off the feeling of vulnerability. She told herself it was nothing— just her mind playing tricks on her. Yet, a slight noise outside made her stiffen. It was probably just one of the guards patrolling the perimeter, she told herself, but her hand instinctively moved toward the bracelet on her wrist.
Rudraksh had insisted she wear it, "Just in case," he had said, his tone serious and commanding. He wasn't someone who took chances with her safety, and tonight, that brought a strange comfort. She pressed her fingers lightly on the bracelet, reassuring herself that it was there.
