The car was packed to the brim-suitcases, snacks, and an unnecessarily large pile of board games that Rio insisted were "absolutely necessary." Y/n stood by the car, arms crossed, watching her mom try to jam yet another bag into the overflowing trunk.
"Mom, are you seriously trying to pack more?" Y/n asked, raising an eyebrow.
Rio grinned, waving off her daughter's concern. "We're not going to run out of things to do or eat on my watch. What if it rains, and we're stuck inside? You'll thank me later."
Agatha stepped out of their house a few doors down, her arms crossed and expression exasperated. "Rio, we're driving three hours to a cabin, not moving to a bunker. Stop packing and get in the car."
"Let her bring the games!" Charlie piped up, practically bouncing as she ran circles around the car. "We might get bored!"
Taylor followed close behind her daughter, carrying a backpack with hiking boots tied to it. "You tell them, Charlie. Preparedness is key."
Y/n chuckled from her spot by the car, her more reserved energy contrasting sharply with her wife and daughter's bubbly enthusiasm. She glanced down at Nicky, who was standing quietly beside her, clutching his favorite stuffed fox.
"Ready to hit the road, buddy?" Y/n asked, ruffling his dark hair.
Nicky nodded solemnly. "Can I sit by the window?"
"Of course," Y/n said with a smile.
"Let's go, let's go, let's go!" Charlie shouted, already climbing into the backseat.
Taylor helped her buckle in, her energy matching her daughter's as they talked a mile a minute about everything they wanted to do once they arrived at the cabin.
Meanwhile, Nicky climbed into his seat with much less fanfare, quietly pulling out a book to read. Y/n slid in next to him, glancing at Taylor and Charlie with an amused smile.
"They're going to wear themselves out before we even get there," Y/n murmured to Agatha as her mama climbed into the passenger seat.
"Let's hope so," Agatha replied with a wink.
The drive to the mountains was a mix of excitement and chaos. Charlie kept up a constant stream of chatter, pointing out every interesting thing she saw out the window.
"Look, a deer!" she exclaimed, pressing her face to the glass.
"That's a cow, sweetheart," Agatha corrected, though her tone was fond.
"Same thing," Charlie said with a shrug, eliciting laughter from Taylor.
On the other hand, Nicky stayed nestled against Y/n's side, content to quietly listen to Y/n read as she rubbed his back absentmindedly, grateful for the moment of calm amidst the chaos.
The cabin was everything they had hoped for-a cozy, rustic retreat surrounded by towering trees and a view of the mountains. When they arrived, Charlie and Taylor burst out of the car, racing to explore the area.
"Mama, look! There's a swing!" Charlie called, her voice echoing through the clearing.
"Be careful!" Y/n called back, though she knew her daughter wouldn't listen.
Nicky stuck close to Y/n's side, clutching her hand as they walked toward the cabin. "Can we go inside, Mama?" he asked softly.
"Of course, buddy," Y/n said, gently squeezing his hand.
Inside, Agatha immediately gravitated toward the kitchen, inspecting the stove and cabinets. "This'll do," she said with a nod, already planning dinner in her head.
