The sound of hangers clattering against the closet rod echoed through Y/n's room as she rummaged through her wardrobe. Dresses, jeans, and sweaters flew onto the bed in a flurry of indecision, creating a chaotic rainbow of fabric. Her heart raced as she glanced at the clock-an hour and a half until James was supposed to pick her up.
Her first date.
The thought sent a shiver down her spine. Excitement battled with anxiety, twisting her stomach into knots. James was sweet, funny, and charming-at least from what she'd seen at school. But now, with the evening fast approaching, her initial thrill was rapidly giving way to nerves.
"Are you sure this is the right thing to wear?" she asked aloud, holding up a light blue sundress and facing her mothers, perched on the edge of her bed.
Rio leaned back casually, sipping from her ever-present cup of coffee, her expression warm and reassuring. On the other hand, Agatha sat upright, her posture tense as if ready to leap into action at a moment's notice. Her arms were crossed, her sharp eyes scrutinizing every detail of the dress.
"You look perfect, sweetheart," Rio said, motioning to the sundress. "It's casual but cute. Plus, it's blue-it brings out your eyes. James won't know what hit him."
"Hmm," Agatha interjected, tilting her head as she squinted at the dress. "Are you sure it's warm enough for the evening? What if it gets cold? You'll need a jacket. Or maybe something less..." Her voice trailed off, her lips pursed as she searched for the right word.
"Less what, Agatha?" Rio teased, a playful eyebrow arched. "Less cute? Less date-appropriate?"
Agatha huffed, clearly unimpressed. "Less... revealing. That hemline is dangerously close to her knees."
Y/n groaned, tossing the dress onto the bed with dramatic flair. "I knew this was a mistake. I should've just canceled."
"No!" both women said in unison, their voices startling Y/n so much she nearly tripped over a pair of discarded shoes.
Rio was the first to recover. "Honey, you can't cancel just because you're nervous. This is a rite of passage. First dates are awkward, sure, but they're also fun! And James seems like a nice kid."
Agatha made a low noise of disapproval. "You've never met him, Rio. For all we know, he's a hooligan."
"Who even says 'hooligan' anymore?" Rio muttered under her breath before turning back to Y/n. "Ignore her. James is probably great. Besides, I taught you self-defense, remember? If he tries anything, he'll eat pavement before the appetizer arrives."
"Not helping, Rio," Agatha snapped, her glare sharp enough to cut glass.
Y/n flopped onto the bed, covering her face with her hands. "This was supposed to be simple. Why does it feel like the end of the world?"
Agatha's expression softened immediately, her maternal instincts kicking in. She moved to sit beside Y/n, brushing a strand of hair out of her face. "Because it's your first date, darling. It's normal to feel overwhelmed. But you don't have to do this if you're not ready."
"Agatha!" Rio exclaimed, looking scandalized. "She is ready. She's just nervous. And that's perfectly valid, but it doesn't mean she should back out."
Y/n sat up, glaring at both of them in exasperation. "You two are not helping."
Agatha sighed, resting a gentle hand on Y/n's shoulder. "I just want you to be safe. You're precious to me, Y/n. And if this boy doesn't treat you like the absolute treasure you are, I'll hex him into next week."
"Mom!" Y/n groaned, though she couldn't suppress the small smile tugging at her lips.
"She's kidding," Rio added quickly, though the mischievous glint in Agatha's eyes suggested otherwise. "Look, we're both just really proud of you. First dates are a big deal. But you'll be great, okay? Just be yourself."
