The late afternoon sun filtered through the windows of the Harkness home, casting golden beams across the cozy living room. Agatha stood in the kitchen, stirring a soup pot, the scent of herbs and vegetables filling the air. Soft jazz music played from a record player in the corner, blending with the quiet hum of magic that always seemed to linger in their home.
In the center of the living room, four-year-old Y/n was completely engrossed in her own little world. She sat on the plush rug, her toys arranged carefully around her. A well-loved teddy bear, a doll with wild curls like her own, and a few colorful blocks were all part of an elaborate tea party.
"Would you like more tea, Mr. Bear?" Y/n asked in a serious tone, holding up an imaginary teapot. She paused, nodding as though the bear had answered. "Oh, of course. Two lumps of sugar. How silly of me!"
Agatha glanced over from the kitchen, smiling softly at the scene. "Is everyone behaving at the tea party?" she asked, her voice teasing.
Y/n giggled. "Yes, Mama. But Mr. Bear wants more sugar."
"Well, we can't have him getting grumpy," Agatha replied, giving the pot one last stir before wiping her hands on a dish towel and walking over. She crouched down beside Y/n, watching her with amusement.
Y/n carefully placed a block on top of another, her little tongue poking out in concentration. As she reached for another toy, something extraordinary happened. The doll next to her began to lift off the ground, wobbling slightly before floating in mid-air.
Y/n gasped, her eyes going wide. "Mama! Look! She's flying!"
Agatha's heart skipped a beat. She straightened, her gaze locked on the floating doll. "Y/n," she said gently, "how are you doing that?"
"I don't know!" Y/n squealed, clapping her hands. "But it's so fun!"
Before Agatha could respond, more toys began to levitate, spinning lazily around the room. Blocks floated in gentle circles, and the teddy bear twirled like a ballerina. Sparkles of purple light danced in the air, casting a magical glow over the space.
Agatha knelt beside Y/n, her voice calm but firm. "Sweetheart, I need you to take a deep breath for me, okay? Can you do that?"
Y/n, still giggling, nodded and took a deep breath, mimicking how Agatha often breathed during her spells. The toys wobbled but remained in the air.
"Good," Agatha praised, gently touching Y/n's back. "Now, I want you to focus. Think about bringing them down slowly. Like when we stack blocks, one at a time."
Y/n furrowed her brow, her small hands reaching out as if guiding the toys. Slowly, one by one, they floated back to the floor, landing softly. The purple glow faded, leaving only the golden sunlight streaming through the windows.
"I did it!" Y/n cheered, bouncing on her knees. "Mama, I did magic!"
Agatha pulled Y/n into a tight hug, her chest swelling with pride. "You did, darling. Your very first spell."
"Can we do more?" Y/n asked eagerly, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
Agatha chuckled, brushing a curl from Y/n's face. "Of course we can. But first, we must ensure you understand how to control it. Magic is a gift, but it's also a responsibility."
Y/n tilted her head. "Responsibility?"
"It means being careful," Agatha explained. "Magic can be powerful, and we must ensure we use it correctly."
Y/n nodded solemnly. "Okay, Mama. I'll be careful."
Agatha smiled. "Good girl. Now, how about we go outside and practice something fun?"

They moved to the backyard, where the grass was soft, and the sky stretched wide and blue above them. Agatha conjured a small, protective dome around the space, ensuring they wouldn't be disturbed.
"Alright, darling," Agatha began, kneeling before Y/n. "We're going to summon glowing bubbles. They're like the ones in your bath, but these will float in the air and shine with magic."
Y/n clapped her hands excitedly. "I love bubbles!"
"I know you do," Agatha said with a smile. "Now, watch me first."
She cupped her hands together, murmuring a soft incantation. A shimmering bubble formed between her palms, glowing with a soft purple hue. With a gentle breath, she released it, and the bubble floated up, catching the sunlight as it drifted higher.
"Wow," Y/n whispered, her eyes wide.
"Your turn," Agatha encouraged. "Cup your hands like this."
Y/n mimicked Agatha's movements, her small hands trembling with excitement.
"Close your eyes," Agatha instructed. "Imagine a bubble. See it in your mind, glowing and floating."
Y/n squeezed her eyes shut, her little brow furrowed in concentration. After a moment, a faint purple glow appeared between her hands.
"Now, breathe gently," Agatha said softly.
Y/n opened her eyes and blew softly. A glowing bubble emerged, floating up into the sky. More bubbles soon followed it, each one shimmering with magic.
"I did it!" Y/n squealed, jumping up and down.
"You did," Agatha said, laughing. "And you did it perfectly."
They spent the next hour filling the backyard with glowing bubbles, Y/n's laughter echoing as she chased them around. Agatha watched, her heart full.
As the sun began to set, casting the sky in shades of pink and orange, Y/n flopped onto the grass, exhausted but happy. Agatha lay beside her, their hands intertwined.
"Mama?" Y/n asked sleepily.
"Yes, darling?"
"Is magic always this fun?"
Agatha smiled, looking up at the sky. "Sometimes. But it can also be hard. That's why we practice."
"I like it," Y/n murmured, her eyes drifting closed. "I want to do more."
"And we will," Agatha promised, kissing Y/n's forehead. "Every day, we'll learn together."
Y/n's breathing slowed, and she fell asleep with a soft smile. Agatha stayed by her side, watching the stars appear one by one.
In that quiet moment, with her daughter safely tucked against her, Agatha felt a peace she hadn't known in years.
Magic was a gift, but family was the greatest magic of all.
