Kathryn Hahn's kitchen smelled like cinnamon and chocolate, a testament to the current baking spree. The counters were covered with flour, bowls of dough, and half-eaten cookies, evidence of taste-testing by everyone involved. Y/n stood by the island, phone in hand, her face illuminated by the screen as her fingers tapped away. A small, unconscious smile played on her lips.
"Okay, spill," Aubrey Plaza said, pointing a flour-dusted finger at Y/n. "What's so funny?"
"Huh?" Y/n looked up, blinking. "Oh, nothing. Just a meme."
Kathryn exchanged a knowing glance with Aubrey as Mae, Kathryn's teenage daughter, peeked over the counter's edge. "Uh-huh, sure," Mae teased, rolling out the dough for sugar cookies. "You've been smiling at your phone all afternoon. Either that meme's pure gold or there's something you're not telling us."
"It's nothing," Y/n said quickly, stuffing her phone into her back pocket. "Focus on your cookies, Mae."
"Suspicious," Aubrey drawled, narrowing her eyes. But she let it slide, grabbing a spatula to decorate her own batch of cookies. For a while, the conversation drifted back to baking disasters and the upcoming premiere of Agatha All Along. Y/n thought she was off the hook.
That was until her phone, still in her pocket, started buzzing repeatedly.
"Jeez, who's blowing up your phone?" Kathryn asked, pausing mid-cookie sprinkle.
"Probably her meme dealer," Mae quipped, earning a snort from Aubrey.
Y/n shifted uncomfortably. "It's nothing, just... group chats. You know how chaotic they can get."
But the buzzing didn't stop. Quicker than Y/n anticipated, Mae darted around the island and snatched the phone from her pocket.
"Mae! Give it back!" Y/n cried, lunging for her, but the younger girl was already scrolling through the notifications with a wicked grin.
"Ooooh, who is this Jamie with a heart by his name?" Mae teased, holding the phone just out of reach. "'Can't wait to see you tonight... Miss you already... You looked stunning yesterday...'"
Kathryn and Aubrey's heads snapped up simultaneously. "Wait, what?" Kathryn said, abandoning her cookie entirely.
"Mae, I swear, give me the phone," Y/n pleaded, her face flushing crimson.
Aubrey cackled, swooping in to block Y/n's path. "Oh no, you're not getting out of this one. Kathryn, did you know about this?"
"Not a clue," Kathryn said, crossing her arms. "But I'm deeply intrigued."
Mae handed the phone to her mom with a smug look. Kathryn skimmed through the texts, her eyebrows shooting up. "He's... a singer? An up-and-coming singer?"
"And she didn't tell us?" Aubrey feigned betrayal, clutching her chest. "How dare you, Y/n?"
Y/n groaned, burying her face in her hands. "It's new, okay? I didn't want to make a big deal out of it."
"New or not, we're officially making a big deal out of it," Kathryn declared, waving the phone. "This Jamie Miller better be a saint because if he's not, he is going to have to answer to us."
"Agreed," Aubrey said, nodding sagely. "We need to meet him. Bring him to the premiere."
"Or dinner," Kathryn added. "Something. Anything. He's not escaping our scrutiny."
"You guys are impossible," Y/n muttered, though a small smile tugged at her lips.
"And you love us for it," Aubrey teased, throwing an arm around Y/n's shoulders. "Now, spill everything. How'd you meet him?"
Y/n sighed, giving in. "Fine. But someone else is finishing my batch of cookies."
"Deal," Kathryn and Aubrey said in unison, both leaning in eagerly as Y/n began recounting how she and Jamie had crossed paths. Mae listened, too, her smugness giving way to genuine curiosity. The kitchen buzzed with laughter and teasing as the story unfolded.
"Wait," Kathryn interrupted as Y/n finished her tale about meeting Jamie at a music event. "So he saw you across the room, came up with that cheesy line, and it worked?"
"It wasn't cheesy!" Y/n protested, laughing. "It was sweet. He was sweet."
"Sounds like a rom-com setup to me," Aubrey teased, leaning back in her chair. "What's his singing voice like? Is he one of those brooding, soulful types, or more of a poppy 'boy-next-door'?"
"Somewhere in between," Y/n said, her cheeks still pink. "He's got this youthful tone... it's really nice."
"Ugh, we're already swooning, and we haven't even met him," Kathryn said dramatically. "Mae, what do you think? Does this Jamie guy pass the vibe check?"
Mae smirked. "I need more evidence, but he seems okay so far. If he breaks her heart, though..."
"Right?" Aubrey said, feigning a protective stance. "We'll hunt him down. No pressure, Y/n."
Y/n shook her head, laughing. "You're all ridiculous. Can we please get back to baking before my cookies burn?"
"Fine," Kathryn relented, sliding back to the counter. "But you're not off the hook. Dinner. Premiere. Something. We're meeting him."
"Deal," Y/n said, finally reclaiming her phone. But even as she turned back to the dough, her smile lingered, a warmth spreading through her at the thought of Jamie meeting her chaotic but loving second family.
