Rita Rossweisse wasn't a keen fan of being followed around, but since it was her former teammate she had allowed it.
"It's not as if I am planning on sinking this ship, Sal."
"I am aware, commander."
"I don't go by that rank anymore, Lieutenant."
"Tsk." He clicked his tongue in mock annoyance. "And here I thought you would allow me to go crazy in a Gundam."
"There's something called copyright, you can't just call our mech a Gundam." Rita sighed.
"It's not as if we will ever get an anime adaptation, Commander."
Rita gave him a scrutinizing look. "Has your time spying on Miss Kiana finally gotten to you?"
Sal laughed in return.
Rita could only smile at this gesture. How long has it been since the two of them were able to talk like this? Two years? No maybe four? She didn't know anymore. Everything after Project Dusk, felt like a bout of long nightmare, one she wished to wake up from soon.
"You didn't come to visit her this year too." Rita quietly brought up the topic. It wasn't something she was sure Sal was keen on entertaining.
"Not yet." Sal's eyes darkened as he averted his gaze. "I am not ready to face Captain just yet."
"I see."
"It isn't as if I am trying to avoid her, but-"
"You don't have to justify it, Sal," Rita stopped him. "I know, and I am sure even she does."
"You think so?"
Rita nodded.
"Thanks."
"You know I have always wondered Sal." Rita gazed at the scarlet ceiling of the Mech Hangar 32-D. "What was it that Sophia told you that day?"
"Oh..." Sal gave her a sad smile. He no longer felt the urge to react or to run when he heard that name. Now it felt as if he was reminiscing about fond memories. "It was nothing special."
