Shrouded by the desolate cobble path, Sal trudged towards the elevated rubble. He was in Nagazora. Kiana, after escaping from the Shicksal laboratory, had contacted Sal. They had regrouped; fights, a slap, and a furious hug were involved. And afterwards, the horror of their reality. Kiana was to die in two months, and she was okay with it. Because in the end, that was her mission. And ironically, her death, post-Herrscher fiasco, was Sal's.
Sal took a ragged breath; his limbs trembled under the shivering rain. The grey cloud hung over him, barring even a tiny shimmer. This city stank of ruination, and now, holding the weight of their future, Sal wondered if he had made the right choice. Ever.
He coughed, the Gem of Ruinā, thumping against his chest. Raising his palm, he covered his mouth as blood splattered over it.
"Kiana, you are a handful..." A smile erupted across his blood-laden lips. Even in the face of adversity, she was his light. "How am I supposed to keep up if you keep running away like this?"
A thunder rumbled, shaking the ground. Sal quickly turned around; his arms ached. And then with a trembling arc, he buried the sword's tip over the wooden patch. The ground swayed as he felt the hilt rub against his bandaged chest. For a moment, Sal braced himself. He was sure the stitches would come undone. But Sora's handiwork was stronger.
After a brief moment, the quake subsided. The welling waves of murky water crashed over him as he followed its trail and cast a glance upwards. Flashes of golden-black hues ran over the horizon. A blast of magenta and a piercing roar followed. Kiana was engaged in a battle of attrition with Raiden Mei. Which Sal had specifically asked her not to do. She, who couldn't understand her hurt, made his stomach churn.
Raiden Mei was a good friend to Sal Apocalypse. She was the first person, except Kiana, who had accepted him in St Freya. By the sequence of events, it would not be a long shot to call two of them family, and they sometimes did. But did the two mean it? No one knew.
After all, for Raiden Mei, Sal Apocalypse was the mirror image of Kiana Kaslana. For Sal, Mei was the person Kiana chose. That was an indisputable fact. And the empirical evidence backing it was overflowing through the Sea of Quanta. He had seen it multiple times. So he knew, no matter what universe, Raiden Mei would be chosen by Kiana Kaslana. He would never be there. It was as if he never existed.
It was tragic. But it was the reality. And thus he accepted it. Along with that, he also respected her decision. If Kiana Kaslana were to choose Mei, her job was to pat her on the back and support her.
Another thunder roared, piercing the sky into two. A streak of red lightning erupted, as circular portals—Authority of Herrscher of void—opened around them. Kiana was calling out the power of the Gem of Conquest.
He clenched his jaws and broke into a fumbling run.
That idiot. He cursed her. This is why I never listen to you; you never listen to me either. You promised Kiana we would go to the beach before it ends. If you keep this up...
He willed himself to stop. The inevitable, which Dr. Einstein and Dr. Tesla had proposed, was still fresh in his mind. Their logical yet emotional reasoning echoed:
"Kiana only has two months left to live..." Dr. Eintsten had repeated nonchalantly. "Even then the AE have decided it is best to eliminate her to contain the threat of Sirin running rampant again."
Thud
His feet scraped on the rubble of Chiba Academy. His limbs faltered as he broke into a stumble. He was almost there. Sal held onto his sword, as Hersscher gem withing his heart glowered. He bit his lower lip, a trick he learnt after Project Dusk, which helped him keep his consciousness intact. And in the worst case, he could burn his back. Then wait for it to heal slowly, feeling each tendril of his muscle rebuilt, as the dissipated skin painfully stitched itself back together.
