"I have always loved him, I just wasn't ready to accept it," Susannah whispered, with Seele giving her a gentle nod. The day to leave the Ogasawara was only a breath away, and the blonde girl had yet to receive an answer from her childhood friend, crush, best friend and someone she could never de-entangle herself from.
"It must have been tough to keep it all in." Seele gently squeezed her hand, showing a subtle gesture of support. Susannah shot a tired smile. Her eyes were red after a night of crying. She felt terrified and alone.
After what she had done out of envy and love for Kiana, Susannah felt ugly. But she wasn't that. She really wanted the best for Kiana and for Sal. But she also wanted the best for herself; how could she do that if the requirement was to let go of her love, just because he was in love with another? It wasn't fair.
"It doesn't get better, Seele." A single trickle started it again. "It never gets better. I love him so much that it hurts. I don't want to lose him, but I also don't want to hold him back. I want him to be happy, but I also want me to be happy. How can I keep both of us happy?"
The echoes of the distant past shimmered in a quiet descent. Her vision dimmed, and the outline of Seele blurred as images from ages past played out before her. The lazy afternoons in the academy, the goofy shenanigans, sleepovers, study together, Honkai subjugation mission, birthdays, all of it returned. It was a moment of tranquillity and joy. Susannah missed it.
And then there was Sal-charming, intelligent and lovable. He stood there with a lopsided grin and a sparkle that made her heart melt. He was always there. From the inception to the end, only Sal Apocalypse remained a constant in her life. And thus, a future where he was no longer by her side was a grim prospect that she had never considered. Yet, now with Kiana Kaslana's presence, that was an inevitable reality.
"This might not be what you want to hear, Susannah, but sometimes to be happy, you might have to let go of making others happy as well," Seele spoke in measured tone. Each word carefully chosen, weaved into a strict yet compassionate reply. "You can't have both together."
"But won't that make me a bad person?" Susannah croaked.
"No," Seele pulled her into a tight embrace. "It would only make you human. And for that, you should never feel ashamed. You loved someone, and you wanted to be true to your heart for them. And for that, bad things happened, but you never betrayed yourself, not even once."
"But I hurt her, and also him." Susannah held her tight. She needed this hug. After all that had happened, she was barely holding herself together.
"Then apologise, and once you are done, declare your love, but this time don't run away, Susannah." Seele gave a gentle head pat. "Face him, and his decision."
"What if it's a no?"
"Then respect it, and move forward."
"What if I can't? What if I don't want to?"
"You will," Seele gave her a gentle squeeze. "Maybe not today, or tomorrow, but in time you will."
"How can you be so sure?"
"Because you love him, Susannah. And to you, his happiness is the most important in this world."
And thus Susannah Manatt made her final decision. She was to confront Sal Apocalypse once again on the eve of the Ogasawara Bonin festival tomorrow, and there she would let out all her feelings for once and for all.
