Sal held Susannah by the waist as her arm rested over his shoulder. The two matched each other's movements, as the gentle yet melodious symphony from the violin-piano duet shimmered in, embracing the two friends.
Susannah took a few steps backwards, her heels staggered on a hasty contact with pebble ground. Her shoulders stiffened, as her eyes glinted with fear; however, Sal pulled her closer, saving the blonde princess from tripping.
"Scramble Brains." He teased with a smile.
"Idiot." She responded with her free hand resting over his chest.
Over their heads was an intricate web of glowing wires that poured golden rays below, covering them in a heavenly atmosphere. The night breeze rustled as a few distance away, the organising committee held the torch near the bonfire, lighting it up.
That moment was a spectacle as the fire cackled and rushed upwards.
"Can't believe this will be the last time we will be watching this," said Sal in a nostalgic tone.
"Who's the sentimental one now?" Susannah cutely pointed out with a hum.
"I am." He agreed as they slowly danced towards the edge. "But only because I won't be able to do this next year."
"Dance with me?" She asked in a whisper.
"Yes." His lips curled up in a bittersweet smile. "It's been our tradition since year one."
Susannah giggled, remembering how bad Sal used to be when they danced for the first time together. It was three years ago, when she offered to dance with him, back then they were not on talking terms, but Susannah felt sad seeing him being left out. Though it ended in a disaster, not only for him but for her, too. They stepped on each other's toes multiple times and even crashed at the buffet table. It was a disaster.
"It was your fault that we crashed back then." Sal pouted.
"Tsk." Susannah clicked her tongue in fake anger. "You really have me figured out."
"I have known you for almost four years now." He said with pride. "Of course, I know what you are thinking."
"Pfftt-hahaha" Susannah broke into a fit of laughter as tears rolled down her cheeks. "You should have looked at your face. You looked like a kid when you sai-" She made a Sal impersonation. "-I have known you for almost four years, of course I know what you are thinking, my beloved."
"I never said that last line!"
"Really?" She teased him. "Because I am sure I heard that."
Meanwhile, at the buffet table adjacent to them sat Alvitr, along with Fai and Audrey.
"Isn't he quite the flirt?" Audrey asked as she took a sip of her fruit punch.
"Susannah and Sal?" Alvitr inquired.
Audrey nodded as she gave her the 'isn't it obvious look.'
"Well... It's complicated."
"Is it now?" Audrey had a sly grin, she wanted to know the details.
"I don't think the two of them even consider the fact that they can ever have romantic feelings for each other." She continued. "It's like they don't even consider if that option even exists for them."
"You think so?"
"Yeah." Alvitr picked a slice of pizza. "Why don't you?"
"From what it looks, it's as if out of the two, one doesn't consider it an option while the other buries their feeling." Audrey shrugged. "But that and Sal being a flirt now are two seperate problems altogether."
"That I agree."
"Well, I think it goes both ways," Fai responded for the first time.
"Is the great Fai finally understanding romantic feelings?" Audrey teased her eyes glinting with mischief.
"No, but look at them, both of them are a flirt. Susannah for wanting that dance and Sal for giving it to her."
Alvitr and Audrey let out a knowing giggle at his answer.
