The entire student body, along with the esteemed guests as well as Lilith Squadron, gathered around the two-foot-tall installation, which would be lit up at midnight. Sal, who had accidentally slept right next to Susannah, was now in his room trying to find a decent outfit for the final event of the three-day-long festival.
He brought out a matching pair of white-black shirt and pants, along with a blazer and a plain golden tie. He has his formal boots polished, and thanks to Sophia, his mechanical watch, the one that he broke in his last unofficial mission, sat on his bedside table looking new.
As he changed into his outfit, the boy went in front of the mirror. His hair was a mess, they were all over the place, and thus, taking a pinch of wax, he whipped it into shape. And just when he was about to leave, there was a knock at his door. It lasted for three strikes only.
"Password first." He grinned as he made his tie.
"Scramble Brains is a genius." A soft, feminine voice trickled from outside.
"Only if she was," Sal replied in a teasing tone as he pushed the door open. He was met with an eager Susannah, who was draped in a golden dress with its edges almost touching the ground, around her neck was a lily-shaped necklace, and she wore an amethyst tiara over her head. Her hair was carefully groomed as it waved with her movement.
Susannah stuck out her tongue and entered. "But she is."
"A genius at annoying her best friend?" Sal took her hand and pulled her in. "That she truly is."
"Why do I even keep up with you?"
"Because you love me too much."
"Lords above," She shook her head overdramatically. "If you weren't my childhood friend and my love for you was even a per cent less, I would never talk to you."
"Ouch, that hurt."
"You deserved it." She winked and swirled around as if showing off her dress. "But don't you have something to say to this pretty girl?"
"Beats me." He gave her a teasing grin.
Susannah rolled her eyes with a playful sigh as her arms slipped effortlessly around his neck. "What about now?" She whispered, leaning in as her forehead rested against his.
"You smell of strawberries." He flashed her an innocent grin as he detached himself from her.
"That's all you have to say." She puffed her cheeks, giving him a cute pout. "Hmph"
Sal sighed and leaned in as he gave her a head pat. "Scramble Brains, you look pretty in anything you wear. So there is no point stating the obvious, you know."
"Still, I wanted to hear my best friend say it."
"So spoiled."
"Ehehe-keep spoiling me with compliments always." She gave her a hug as the boy could only smile.
"Yeah, yeah. Always your highness."
"Ehehehe" She giggled with her face buried in his chest.
"What am I gonna do with you?" He sighed and stayed in that position for a while. However, as he tried to detach himself from her, he was faced with light resistance. Her fingers held the back of his coat tightly, as she showed no signs of letting him go.
"Susannah?"
"Can't we stay like this awhile longer?" She asked in a low tone.
"We can, but I don't think being late to our last academy festival is something we both want." He gave her an understanding reply, all the while gently patting her back.
"That is exactly why I don't wanna let go."
"Huh?"
"I don't want this to end." She said with sadness.
"We still have a few weeks left, Scramble Brains." Sal placed his cheeks over her head. "And we will be together through it all."
"Promise?" She peeked at him, her amber eyes begging.
"Yep, promise."
As the two of them detached, the sound of future Valkyries and Knights rejoicing in their final festival permeated the dorm room.
"Well, I think that's our cue."
"Tsk," She clicked her tongue. "I wish to spend more time here."
"Lazy."
"Hey!" Susannah glared at him. "Also-" she tiptoed as her heels stretched upwards. "-Why are you still taller than me even after I wore heels?"
"I am just built differently."
"Huh?"
Not wanting to entertain the girl any further, he slid past her and opened the door, ready to dash to the bonfire plaza. "Race you there!"
"Hey!" Susannah called out as she pulled up her dress. "I can't run in these-"
