There was the rustling of the winds kissing upon the maple leaves as they made their way towards the blonde girl, who, still in her golden dress, took careful steps over the broken stairs of the fifth academic building of the Shicksal academy. She felt herself shiver despite the coat she borrowed from her best friend; it was getting colder as the night passed.
This may be a bad idea. She thought. Her fingers held the bent metal railing as she pushed herself over the last three steps and stopped before the locked metal door. It had a bolt lock.
"Very modern of them..." She let out an annoyed whisper. Behind her, she heard the sound of carefully placed footsteps, as the debris from the gravel ground with each other more gently than when she was there.
"Careful..." She called out as her heart beat fast, when she saw him almost slip before the final steps."
Sal gave her a silly grin as he jumped over the broken area and landed right before her. She had an exasperated expression but still accepted his childish antics. After all, if not her, then who else?
"...Idiot," She murmured and turned over, as she held the rusty lock. She could feel the coarse surface on her skin as she tried to force it open with strength."What are you doing?" Sal asked innocently, his head peeking over her shoulder as he rested his chin.
"Trying to break the lock." She replied without looking back. "Not that it's working out."
"You know right, just because it's rusted, it doesn't mean it will turn into dust if you squeeze it..."
"Then what shall I do, O'great hero?"
Sal, without replying, slipped his arm from below her shoulders, touching her abdomen as he held the lock. His fingers started tinkering with it as concentrated particles of honkai energy slowly flowed from his fingers.
"If you wanted to hug me, you could have just said so." Susannah teased him as she leaned on his chest, using it as a comfortable resting place.
"Damn you figured out my plan?" He replied even more teasingly.
"Hehe-" She snickered. "Who do you think I am? I know what you want, idiot."
"Then you would also know that I never offered my chest as a bed for you."
"That is my best friend's privilege."
"Can you define best friend privilege, Scramble Brains?" He shook his head as the lock broke
apart with a popping sound.
"To always comfort me when I want to be comforted." She announced.
"I think we might have to work that definition out." He replied and slowly detached from her. "Also, the door is open now, Princess~"
"Ooh, I didn't know we were still in your Gundam role-play world?" Susannah craned her neck upwards and gazed into his joyful sea-green eyes.
"Maybe we are." He admitted with a smile and pushed her away. "Now, shall we go to the terrace to be the test subject for the legend?"
"You make it sound like we are lab rats, so unromantic." Susannah stuck out her tongue as she pushed past the metal door onto the marble-floored terrace.
"The only romantic thing about this entire legend is its existence."
"So untactful of you, Sal Apocalypse."
"You are the last person allowed to teach me tact, Manatt."
"I didn't know we were on last-name basis, Apocalypse." She gave him a fake glare.
"Oh, are we?" He played along and shrugged his shoulders. "I wasn't aware of that, Manatt."
"So much for thinking I was finally about to get marriage security by coming here with my best friend." She turned around with her hand on her hips and dramatically walked towards the railing. "Whatever will happen to this maiden now? Will she stay single forever?"
"I pity whoever your husband will be." He winked at her with a sly grin. "He would have to deal with such a drama queen."
"If the legends are even a per cent true," She gave him an even slyer grin. "Then you are the only viable candidate as of now."
"Oh my." He clenched his chest as if he were having a heart attack. "What a blunder I've made? I can't spend my entire life with this woman."
"Hey!" She marched towards him and held him by his shoulders. "I am not that bad."
"I never said you were."
"But you implied it." She was pouting now.
"No, I didn't."
"Idiot."
"Scramble Brains."
And then the two burst out laughing. The clock had struck midnight, and the bonfire below lit up as the flames reached the sky while the entire academy cheered.
"Sal Apocalypse, if you weren't my best friend, I might have considered marrying you right now." She grinned with a dramatic flair.
"Oof," He replied, the gesture in kind with his dramatic skills. "Well, if you weren't my best friend, then maybe, just a tiny bit maybe, I might have considered marrying you too."
"Touche, Apocalypse."
"Not at all, Manatt."
"I love you." She smiled, embracing the boy.
"I know." He replied as he returned the hug. "Me too."
"Hehe," She closed her eyes as she remembered their memories together on this campus. All the lazy afternoons, she would find him napping by the lawn, or when he would be studying in the library while she slept, as it felt cosy. Even when they would just pull some shenanigans in class or during physical training. "Sal, be my best friend forever, okay?"
"Is that even a question?" Sal replied with conviction. "You are stuck with me for good."
"I know..." She snuggled closer to his chest. "We will be together forever."
And with that, their Academy days together came to an end.
