KiaSal Drabble 61: Forgotten Memories 4.6 More Than Friends, But Not Lovers

Spending the sunrise in Sal's arms as they gazed at the shimmering orange hue over the turquoise of the Pacific had become the white haired girl's favourite pastime activity ever since they had made up. Snuggling to his side, she rubbed her cheeks over his and pinched his nose, shooting a dumb smile.

Sal heaved a sigh but smiled nonetheless. They weren't dating, nor were they in a situationship, nor were they married, but the distance between them was intimate. They didn't have an answer as to why. But they both knew this was the most natural for them.

He needed her, and she did too. It was a codependency, one that was on the periphery of toxicity, but with single and steady steps, the two were slowly discovering themselves. It was a harsh road, the road of healing, but that is something they were ready to take. The hiss from waves filled the vicinity, and Kiana bobbed her head to the side. Her gaze was cast over Sal, whose brows were raised and eyes distant.

"Penny for your thought?" Asked Kiana, making Sal blink in surprise.

He shook his head and then smirked. "Is that all my worth for you, Kaslana?"

"Oh, stop being dramatic, Apocalypse," She pulled him by the neck, placing her forehead over his. "You and I both know, your worth in my life is incomputable."

That effectively shut him up. And Kiana smiled with triumph.

"Is that your new game, Dumbo?" Sal puffed his cheeks. "Make me blush, and then trample over my heart."

"Last time I checked, the one who wouldn't listen to me was you."Sal shuddered, Kiana grinned.

"It was just once."

"What about that time in Davao?"

"Two..." He mumbled, burying his face in her hair.

"And that time in Mt. Taixuan or Nagazora,"

"Fine, there were more than one instance," Sal muttered.

"My dear friend," Kiana gave him a toothy smile. "When it comes to not listening to me, there is no one as aggravating as you. I think you are the only person born who can frustrate me as much as make me love-" Kiana paused, holding back. She was about to blurt out her feelings.

Sal gave her a tilted glance. Kiana hid herself in his chest. She didn't want him to see the blushing mess she was.

Tayrah had explained that the more she became accepting of the past, the harder it would be to hold her feelings for him. It was a given. Until now, the only thing that had stopped Kiana Kaslana from loving Sal Apocalypse was the unresolved trauma she had carried. And now, with that slowly dissipating, the real her was trickling back. She loved Sal Apocalypse, and it felt therapeutic.

"As for my thoughts," Sal said after a pause. "Scramble br-" His lips pursed, Kiana felt her chest tighten. She knew where this was going.

"Susannah," He started again. "She wanted to visit the Bonin festival with me. It's an old tradition of ours; we haven't done it in a while."

"Tradition?" Kiana asked for her grip over him, subtle but tense.

Sal nodded. "During every festival in Schicksal Academy, the two of us would sneak onto the roof and spend time alone. It was our well bestie-time."

Kiana let out a stifled laugh. She could imagine a fourteen-year-old Sal dragging the poor airhead into one of his late-night shenanigans. It almost made her envious of the other girl. Susannah had been there with him before her. Their friendship and bond were rooted far deeply than what she and Sal had shared, but she also knew bonds between people are not to be compared but celebrated.

"So are you asking permission?"

Sal tensed. Kiana smiled.

The Dork never changes. Stay the adorable idiot you are.

"No..."

"Then?"

"I wanted you to know." Sal shrugged. "You helped me with taking the step of being clear about my feelings, thus you deserved to know."

"Basically, you want to come cry in my arms after you are done breaking your best friend's heart?"

"I never said that." Sal pressed his lips shut. Kiana could see the guilt flash through his eyes. She quickly pulled him into another embrace, and this time, Sal accepted.

"I am scared..." Sal mumbled. "I don't want to lose her, Kiana. I love her; she is my best friend."She didn't reply. What the boy needed wasn't words but a gentle space for acceptance.

"But if I am not clear, I would still lose her. I don't want that either. She is important to me, she really is, and that is why to Susannah, I can never be dishonest."

Kiana smiled. She was proud of him.

"I am proud of you." Kiana let out with a head pat.

"What for?" He said in a whisper.

"For being caring and such an understanding friend."

"But I will still hurt her."

"You see, Sal, when you love someone, hurt is natural." Kiana gave his shoulder a squeeze. "To fall in love with anything, a person or your passion, you choose to become vulnerable. Meaning, you are vulnerable to hurt. You can't stop that, but even so, that doesn't mean you will not face it. You choosing to he real gives Susannah the courage to also he true to herself. Be honest, and also listen to her with honesty. That is the best you can do for yourself, her and the relationship you both share."
