to quote Jack Wolfe in next to normal- "I'M ALIIIIIVVVEEEEE"
Travis:
There were very few moments in my life where I felt regret. Sure, I could admit something I had done was stupid, but would I end up doing something similar? Probably. My personal belief was that life was way too short to be worried about things I should have done differently, and I rarely stray from this belief.
Except right now.
"Katie, please just talk to me." I pleaded, following her as she marched resolutely through the rows of strawberry fields.
My gut twisted. I felt physically sick. I couldn't even remember the last time I had felt this terrible about a prank, this guilty.
She remained silent, and I couldn't be more grateful for how big the strawberry fields were, because we had a lot farther to walk to get to her post.
"Please, Katie." I begged. I needed her to look at me. I craved her attention even when she wasn't mad at me, but now? I had to hold myself back from grabbing her shoulders and turning her around.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I'm such an idiot and I don't know why I thought that was a good idea and I'm the stupidest person to ever walk this earth." She said nothing. Under the familiar orange of our camp shirts, her posture was rigid and unchanging. Her long brown waves fluttered with the breeze, but I refused to be distracted by it.
"Please look at me, Katie. I'm an idiot." I couldn't help myself any longer. I grabbed the empty basket she was carrying out of her hands so she was forced to turn around. The second I saw her familiar green eyes, swimming with anger and hurt, my guilt doubled. I felt sucker punched, and it was all my fault.
For the first time in years, Katie and I's summer hadn't been defined by how much she hates me. From the end of last summer, when Annabeth and Percy not so subtly began dropping hints to be nicer, to this year, where she has willingly spent time with me, we became....friends.
Unfortunately for me, my crush on her has become even more all-consuming. Was I in love with her when she hated me? Yes. But this summer, watching her laugh at my jokes or share secret moments has only made me fall deeper.
So when Erica, one of my sisters, started to question me about this change in relationship, I felt a strange pitch in my stomach.
"When did you stop provoking Katie?" She taunted one morning, catching the attention of the rest of our cabin.
I scoffed, trying to laugh at it off, even as a wave of nausea rolled in my stomach. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see Connor duck his head. Even he knew this conversation was not headed in a good place.
"What are you even talking about?" I replied, not wanting an answer.
"Nothing." Erica smirked as she crossed her arms. "Just that, last year, you pulled the infamous cabin decoration" she started, referring to when we moved all of Cabin 4s furniture to their roof, "but this year? Radio silence. And it's not just for her. I mean, almost nobody has been pranked in weeks."
I rolled my eyes, feeling more panic that people had noticed. Truthfully, I didn't want to disappoint Katie. Now that we were friends, she had faith in me, however small it was. I wanted her to want to spend time with me, not be annoyed at some stupid prank I played.
"I threw all of Cabin 12's clothes in the lake." I muttered, going back to folding my clothes to try and distract myself from this conversation.
"Yeah, weeks ago." Erica replied. Our other siblings stopped what they were doing to watch. If there was anything my siblings loved, it was spectating fights.
