7 years ago, the Sorûo Laboratory of General Sciences was lost in a fire.
In that fire, 14 people died.
Cub is assumed to have been one.
Everything was destroyed by this fire, but among the wreckage was a notebook that managed to survive. Most entries are blacked out or damaged, but the rest offer some clues as to what may have happened over the years.
PLEASE NOTE THIS STORY MENTIONS/HAS SUICIDE, PLEASE DONT READ IF THAT IS UPSETTING TO YOU :)
Idk if this is gonna make sense but I knew I wanted to do it. If you've read Occulta Apparentia then this might give you a few more ideas of what exactly happened to cause the fire.
Also again please note this story mentions/has suicide–nothing graphic(I don't think) or anything, but just wanted to warn you in case that's upsetting to anyone!
SK-U1K
– Behaves like a fungus
– Releases spores. Unknown if they are contagious or not(DO NOT OPEN CONTAINER)
– Organic matter
– Could have neurological values
– Could be a stimulant or repressor in some drug form?
– Thrives in subtly warm/any form of cold temperatures
– Does not require oxygen
– Water has no visible effect on its growth
– DO NOT TOUCH WITH BARE HANDS! USE THE RUBBER GLOVES PROVIDED!
– Consumes other organic matter
– Origins are nearly untraceable. It does not share similarities with any clear Taxonomic Rank aside from the Domain Eukarya and follows both Fungi and Protista Kingdom qualifications with the most regularity, but cannot perform photosynthesis and behaves commonly like Fungi
– Prefers darker habitats over light(shrivels under extended exposure to the sun)
– Cannot survive fire
– Will sense living organisms in close proximity(1.2 centimetres) (vibrations and changes to the atmosphere have upped it to 15 metres)
Entry 1: I have assembled a team of scientists from various other fields in order to understand the exact potential of SK-U1K and how it may be applied to the different forms of science. I have a suspicion that I am not the only Solua in this teamup, though I can't identify anyone specifically, and if I'm wrong about one of them...I cannot risk exposure by any means. For now, we will focus on identifying potential ancestors, habitat preferences, and environmental influence.
Entry 5: I have compiled a list of basic, important qualities I have observed so far, being 2 months into the study. Jellie remains everyone's favorite, despite the argument to be made about unsanitary habits by having a cat in the lab. I'm away more often than not and can't bear to leave her alone for so long, or entrust her to the care of another. If Scar were closer, perhaps, but he's still in Sirom. Jellie doesn't cause any trouble anyway, and having her blood readily on hand is useful for the medical/pathological team.
Entry 12: We have narrowed it down to some form of mold-adjacent organism. It is multicellular, consumes organic material(as we swiftly found out in early experiments with Jellie's blood. We have all agreed to take extraordinary precautions and care when handling SK-U1K, and that above all else we do not allow it direct contact with skin or clothing), and has a network of mycelium, though it evidently can survive on its own without much help. It doesn't require an initial food source to live, nor soil to sustain it. We are wondering what gives it this quality.
