Sooooo I wrote about my Canary Concept, I liked it, and I put it up not only here but on Ao3, where it was somehow well enough received that I inspired two people to write their own things. I don't wanna sound like I was bragging there bcs I never intended for that to happen and it genuinely caught me off guard each time.
Anyway I decided to make some stuff up about what if people started getting wise to the Canary and the fact Jimmy must know something about it? Martyn's double win solidified that possibility and so here we are.
The original fic with the canary in it was called Do You Believe In Destiny?('Cause I Don't Have A Choice) and that is a lyric from the song 'The Prophet' by andie schoen. I made this fic and called it Do You Believe In Destiny?(I'm Sure You Probably Don't) bcs I thought it'd be cool to parallel the two lines in that song and idk it felt right but anyway here
Martyn has a plan.
Or at least, he's got the beginnings of one.
Using his fantastic powers of deduction(taking advantage of an extremely tired Joel), he has confirmed two things: Joel saw a little yellow bird in Wild Life, and he saw Jimmy shooting at another one in Limited Life...the Season Martyn won. And if Joel saw the Canary, then it isn't that far a stretch to assume that the other winners have, too. In his information gathering, the blond has also been singling out what are true facts and what remain as theories.
True fact number one: the Canary visits the winners in their Season and presents them with a glimpse of their win.
True fact number two: someone has seen Jimmy interact with a Canary of his own.
Now, that second part about Timmy...
Joel said that he watched the man shoot the bird down(meaning it can also be killed, maybe that's useful? However it clearly came back, so it could also be a fruitless attempt...ugh) and then screamed. "I can still hear it, sometimes." The brunet had stated, either intentionally or drowsily expressed as he shook his head to stave off the sleep for a few more minutes. "Pops into my head for no reason every now and then. Starts off like he'd just won some grand prize, then gets all...broken and despairing. I've never heard him make a noise like that. Been meaning to ask him about it but...I'm a little busy, now."
True fact number three: Timmy knows what the Canary means, or at the very least has a history with it. It isn't too far-fetched to assume that he could also be Their Canary, too.
Therefore, Martyn needs to talk to him about it–talk to all the people who must've had an experience with it, really.
His first target right now(he'll circle back to Joel later) is Scott, intending to meet up with him in a quiet place on Misadventures that hopefully will be left alone. The map is huge; surely it'll be fine.
To his surprise, Scott beats him there.
The coordinates he chose placed them just in front of a lush cave, guarded by the copse of towering spruces that stand as wooden monoliths around it. He's leaning against one of those trees, but upon hearing Martyn's–well, Dennis' approach, Scott stands back up straight and moves to greet him. It's slightly jarring to see the cyan-haired man without the Elven look about him–though Martyn always felt as though he saw an ancient wisdom in his gaze that spoke to being more than just an Elf. He's still very much the same person, but as with all other Hybrids and others, Scott has lost his inhuman traits...mostly.
Leashing Dennis to the nearest tree, the blond puts his hands in his pockets and tries to nonchalantly stroll over. He would've succeeded, too, if Scott hadn't guessed his intention. "I'm assuming you saw it too, right? The Canary." Martyn stops on the spot, slightly disappointed that he knew right away. It just makes getting to the important part easier, though. "Yeah. Wait, how did you know?" He replies. Scott smiles a little, again giving the impression that he's somehow far older than he seems. Maybe it's the way the skin creases around his eyes or something Martyn's reading in the tilt of his head. "I've had a few years to think about it at this point, and I'd bet that you've come to the same conclusion: it comes to visit the winners."
