Okay so I made a single chapter snippet fic thing for a different way a moment from Martyn's episode 2 of Past Life could have gone and apparently people on Ao3 liked it and someone asked for another chapter.
...so I made another chapter. If you're interested in reading it, the first chapter is the one titled 'Taken from Martyn's second Past Life episode'.
In case nobody wants to red that, I'm gonna summarize: the world basically pauses, Martyn deduces it's the Watchers, and confronts them. They weren't happy with his performance last Season and want him to do better. He challenges them and they try to make him fall off a ledge. Scar saves him and mentions that he's stuck in Secret Life. Martyn is pulled away as the world unfreezes and the Rejects discover he's gone, but promises he and Scar will be discussing that later.
This is that later.
Also Martyn swears once at the end. Just so you're aware.
This also mentions my sleep headcanon(long story short Last Life traumatized them from boogeymen and now they can't/won't sleep as much so Grian and Watchers altered the Code so they didn't have to) bcs I love it and it works with the story.
The Session has ended and Cleo has gone to sleep for a bit, leaving Martyn to do whatever he wants with his time.
He thinks it's about time for some answers.
Whispering a message to Scar, Martyn proceeds to make his way to the nearest corner of the map. He thinks it's the southernmost one? He specifically told Scar to head for the one to the right of the Pokéball, so hopefully that works.
It takes him about an hour and a half to walk there, which is when he pauses to take in his surroundings–some spruce forest and a hill obscuring him from prying eyes. It's probably the best cover he's going to get, and he won't complain. It's still nighttime(and will be for a few more hours) and Scar has a longer walk than he does, so he busies himself with making the area safer and killing any mobs that stray too close. He could always use the extra gunpowder, after all. Does Scar know about Them? Martyn would never have guessed, to be honest. Either he hides it incredibly well, or this is a recent development. Actually, maybe it's both. He said he was 'still stuck in Secret Life', but Grian didn't act as though he'd not seen the brunet in a year. None of them did; they acted like everything was normal–like he'd died and made it out like the rest of them. Martyn remembers having died in Limited Life. His time ran out, he felt the sweeping rush of icy cold as the air left his lungs, and he collapsed into the sea and black. Everyone died. Joel killed himself using Ender Pearls, Scott killed himself and since Pearl was Soulbound to him for Double Life, she died as well, albeit still claiming the win. Scott was killed by Grian using Admin commands, and Grian threw himself off of Monopoly Mountain. Scar...
He doesn't remember how Scar died.
Martyn slows, beginning to rack his brain for the memory. It's like his lack of memory around what happened to Grian at the end of Evo. He's wondered about it for quite some time, but never found an answer that felt right. Scar killed Pearl, was informed of his win, and went to press the success button.
He doesn't remember anything after that.
Did he just assume the button killed him? A thing Grian added for whoever won? Maybe. Probably. It sounds(sounded?) plausible enough, but not anymore. Not if Scar's saying otherwise.
Speaking of, he hears approaching footsteps.
Scar has just crested the top of the hill, scanning around before picking his way down the slope towards Martyn. His eyes still hold that weird, subtle but unmistakable sort of glow, and being outside the reach of the torchlight makes it feel more prominent. It sets the Lifer on edge, it always has–even all the way back in Third Life where he assumed it was just how Red Life Scar was. "Hey." He greets, joining Martyn in the middle of the lit up space. "You made it over alright? Teammates didn't give you any trouble?" Martyn inquires, and Scar nods cheerfully. There's a small, fresh cut along his cheek, and multiple holes in his jacket(although those may be older). "Yep! No trouble at all! And as for mobs, I made it in one piece." The man chuckles, then straightens back up again to eye him with seriousness. "I'm...assuming this is about the, uh, the world-pausy thingy?" He asks, lowering his voice. This time, it's Martyn's turn to nod. "Alright." Scar sits himself down on the ground, and after a moment, the blond slowly follows suit. Scar motions for the blond to start, so he does. "I wanna start with you pulling me back. How much of that did you see? How long were you watching before you came to stop me?" Martyn queries. What did you hear? Scar shrugs a little, letting his hands fall into his lap. "Not much, honestly. I saw you starting to walk towards the edge, and it...felt wrong to me, somehow. I couldn't see your face really well, but...I don't know. Anyway, once I realized what you were doing, I threw an Ender Pearl and managed to reach you in time." He recounts, pausing to stifle a yawn near the end. Martyn nods sharply, then continues with his next question. "Alright. Now, can you tell me why you weren't frozen like everyone else?"
