So a few days ago I asked about giving Avid a cool astronaut/space job bcs I was trying to think of one.
This was bcs I apparently wanted to write a small fic around the song Misadventure made by–you guessed it–AvidMC himself.
Coincidentally, I also had a free writing assignment and needed to create a scene that was no less than 500 words and still did not surpass 700. I ended up with 688 words of concept for part of that story and I'm putting it here because it will probably get altered as I write the rest of this story, so I figured it was worth sharing.
...I just really liked it bcs for once i actually used concepts and made my own thing with those themes, like, I used the Creative Library Scar always talks about and it made me really happy anyway here-
There's a harsh, grating squeal from further along the tunnel, and everyone looks to see.
At the far end of the corridor, there is a pulsing mass coalescing upon the ceiling, bubbling and shimmering forth like a mirage with linear edges, yet still holding no definitive outline. It's coming out of the ceiling panels, completely consuming a light and seeping through the lines. As it grows, it develops tendrils, reaching out and seeking space to expand, to explore.
They all collectively step back, sharing in their mute fear and wonder at the sight. Finally, it either finishes growing or gains enough weight to fall to the ground, eliciting a loud bang that makes the majority of them flinch, Avid himself among them. He felt the vibrations of it in his feet, and from how the others shift uneasily, so did they. There is no indication of the creature being fluid despite the way it moves, either. It sounded like a solid, weighty body hitting metal. It scrapes across the floor like it has a hard surface...a shell, maybe? Like an insect's exoskeleton? A shape begins to take form within the mass, the idea of a head and either a back or a limb beginning to rise up in static, jerking and fizzy lines. It's almost like it was made of radio waves instead of what appears to be ever-twisting metal. Avid can feel the fear starting to coil in his stomach, a squirming, nervous pit that grows deeper with each second. You always grow up wondering what may be out there in the universe, and with every day that nothing shows up, you start to assume you have no choice but to trust that there isn't anything at all. What is he supposed to do now that there is? There is no protocol for discovering aliens. All he knows for certain is that it does not belong here, a sentiment that he is not alone in.
"Hey!" Kharver shouts. It snaps its head up, the haze shimmering gold and maroon as it identifies him. "What are you?" Avid grabs his shoulder, hushing and pulling him back. The creature flexes, twisting and coiling as the words appear to reach it, turning into compact waves and lines, then becoming a deep jade around the edges. "What are you?" It echoes. The voice is distorted and warped, as if drawn from somewhere else and refracted. Its body shifts and spikes with the words, and as it moves forward, it proves that it has no need of legs, easily gliding over the ground as if it has no friction. "What are you?" Cammie looks at the others nervously. None of them dare to speak anymore. If it can mimic speech, then they need to watch what they say. What if it tricks them? "What are you?" It repeats more clearly, stepping(if you could call it that) forward again. That sets everyone into motion as they all turn tail and bolt down the hallway. The creature emits a garbled roar of what could almost be words and low, bassy trumpets as it presumably gives chase, the various noises indeterminable as to whether they're man-made or not. Its howl echoes and reverberates against the walls and through the man's skull. He swears it increases the pressure already pounding in his head somehow, a sharp pain flashing through his eyes as the thing screams at them. The door is right there. All he has to do is reach it. Cammie's in, Logan, Kharver, and then Grae. The headache had caused Avid to falter, tripping up his feet and making him fall behind several seconds. Grae is reaching out for him, and he reaches out in turn. He doesn't want to see how close it is. The way everyone is clamoring and shouting is a good enough indication.
He yells as he closes the last few feet to the safety of the door, greeted by several strong, awaiting hands and pulled along as the door slams shut behind him.
-Notes-
When the alien is appearing, my brain thought to the trumpet sound from the Annihilation alien scene(feel free to look it up; you only need to hear the sound a few times to get the idea)
When it tries to imitate Carver's voice, I thought of the Not!Them trying to sound like Sasha near the end of The Magnus Archives episode 39. Also worth looking up if you know what you're looking for
When I mean the weird trumpeting noise the alien makes by roaring when it chases them, I mean the noise that Kane Pixels' Backrooms monster made while chasing the camera guy in the first found footage video he released(like his first Backrooms video he made). It sounds like trumpets and shouting mixed together and for an alien i thought it worked pretty well
When I talk about a haze and weird interpretations of how it looks, I'm talking about certain traits inspired by the Mimics in Edge of Tomorrow. In the movie, when they open their mouths there's this weird shimmery effect like it was giving off heat. While this creature is more fluid-like instead of sharp, twisting tendrils, it looks similar in color(minus the glowing color in the Mimics, it didn't have that).
It moves and sorta looks a little like a more solidified version of the Riot Symbiote from the first Venom movie when it isn't fully shaped into being. The alien's skin is sorta fluid in motion in the same way as that.
