The thoughts that went through Travis's head the second the incomplete catch happened were overflowing.
What the fuck is wrong with me?
I can't believe I just did that.
We lost the whole damn game because of me.
We'll probably not even make the playoffs, and it's all my fucking fault.
Travis stared down at the grass as he walked off the field. It was obvious how disappointed he was and upset he was, and his teammates around him tried to cheer him up, let him know that it was okay, but he just didn't want to hear it. No amount of consoling will help him.
And that's when he instantly began to think of Taylor, up there in the suite watching him mess up the whole game. God, he just knew that she was gonna be so disappointed in him. They always were.
Every girlfriend he's had while he was in the league always showed their disappointment whenever he fucked up, as if his actions would reflect on them and their reputation.
His mind flashed back to a painful loss he faced when he was with Kayla, and how he went looking for her after the game in hopes that he would comfort her and tell her that it was okay, like none of his past exes did. 'Cause of course, he thought she was different.
"Travis! That was such an easy fucking pass! I can't believe you just dropped it like that. Do you know how embarrassing this is for me? I'm dating an ignorant player who can't even catch an easy pass." She yelled at him the second that they were alone so that nobody else could hear.
Even when he first entered the suite after the game, he had to go looking for where she had even gone, and it was clear that she was annoyed from the second they made eye contact, but she had to cover it up since they were in public, which worked for everyone else, but not him.
Travis was suddenly dreading going up to the suite. He was already feeling terrible about himself and didn't want Taylor to start reprimanding him when he just wanted to relax and think about things. She's never yelled at him before, but with his past. He knew it was bound to happen.
The rest of the game continued, but Travis just sat in place, unable to move until the final whistle blew and everyone went onto the field to shake hands and hug. Travis did the same, although he kept his helmet on the whole time to try to console at least a little bit of the pain in his face.
Travis snuck away a little early, walking back by himself to the locker room to change.
He was just finishing up changing when everyone else began to pile into the locker room, followed by Coach Reid, who clearly did not look very happy.
He gave the entire team a pretty tough and angry speech before he let them go, and Travis was the first out of the locker room.
Trying to keep his breathing even and preparing for the yelling about how he sucks and is embarrassing everyone around him.
When he opened the door, everyone looked his way, a few conversations ceasing with quiet chatter still in the background. Everyone knew that Travis was harder to console and talk to when he was upset about a pretty big loss.
