˗ˏˋ ★ ˎˊ˗ It had been eighteen months since the gates opened.
Since Vecna , since Max, since Eddie.
That event, that "earthquake", changed everything in Hawkins.
The most notable change was the quarantine. As ordered by the military, everybody who was in Hawkins when the spores fell from the sky last spring couldn't leave the town until stated otherwise.
Then it was Main Street. The entire street was blocked off by the military, restricted access.
So following graduation, Kat was stuck in Hawkins. She had to give up her scholarship, give up her spot at Stanford.
But it's okay, really!
Even though Kat had lost the only thing she'd been working towards her entire life, there were a few pluses.
Like her boyfriend!
Kat and Steve Harrington had been (officially) together since the summer after Vecna. After their kiss at the relief center, it was sort of a slow process. They had attempted to keep their thing a secret, but when Dustin walked in on them one too many times, they decided it'd be better if they told everyone before Dustin did.
Another plus was her job at the radio station.
Since they were tapped in Hawkins, Kat, Nancy, Robin, Steve, and Jonathan started up a radio channel, The Squawk. It was a good pastime, and useful for sending out coded messages under the guise of a broadcast. But we'll get to that part later.
The morning of November 3rd was just like any other morning.
Kat woke up early to head to the Squawk, arriving before everybody else.
She carefully walked up the path, balancing law textbooks and highlighters in her arms. Kat finally reached the door, only to find that it was locked.
