AUGUST 12, 1986
˗ˏˋ ★ ˎˊ˗ Kat Henderson and Steve Harrington burst through the front door of the empty Harrington house.
Goosebumps grew on Kat's arms as she left the humid atmosphere and entered the air conditioned house.
Kat was leading the way, her and Steve's fingers interlocked.
Almost the moment the door shut behind them, Kat rested her hands on the back of Steve's neck and began to kiss him. This had been a daily routine for the two almost every day of the summer, whether they were at Steve's house, Kat's (they avoided Dustin like the plague), the backseat of Steve's car parked on a back road, or an empty bedroom at a house party.
The only part of this that Kat didn't like was the fact that they weren't actually dating. Her and Steve had been "a little more than friends" since March, but there wasn't anything she wanted more than to call him her boyfriend.
She wanted to tell everybody that she was in love with Steve Harrington, she wanted to hold his hand in front of her friends, rest her head on his shoulder, wear his sweatshirt. She wanted to be his.
Kat and Steve broke away to catch their breath, smiling as they looked at each other. The two made their way to the couch, continuing on with their activities.
Kat sat on Steve's lap, legs straddled, and planted kisses down his neck.
Steve seemed not as into it as usual. He moved his hands from Kat's thighs to her shoulders, slightly pushing her off.
Kat furrowed her brows. "What's wrong?" she asked him, seeing how clearly bothered Steve looked. "Did I do something wro—"
"—No, no, no." Steve shook his head. Kat slid off of his lap, now sitting beside him. "It's just...There's been something on my mind." He seemed unsure, like he didn't want to say whatever it was that was on his mind.
"What is it?" Kat asked. "You can tell me anything."
Steve took in a deep breath. "I know we try not to talk about it, but do you remember last summer, in the bathroom stall..." he trailed off.
Kat nodded, encouraging Steve to continue. "Yeah, what about it?" she asked, not really wanting to remember that day.
"Robin asked me if I had ever been in love," Steve said. Kat could basically see the scene play out in his eyes. "I told you guys that I liked Robin."
Kat just continued to nod.
Steve's bottom lip quivered just slightly, his eyes glazing over. "That...that wasn't true."
Kat's mouth went dry. She couldn't find a response.
"It was you," Steve finally said. "I liked you."
Now Kat's eyes glazed over. "What?" she said, unable to believe it.
"It was never Robin," Steve went on. "It was always you."
Kat was silent. Her mouth just opened and closed. Fireworks exploded in her stomach. A feeling of pure happiness pumped through her veins.
She thought back to that moment. Kat had hoped Steve had liked her, that maybe if he did, she'd have a better understanding of her own feelings.
All Kat could get out of her mouth was, "Really?" Her eyes were wide as she studied Steve's entire face and thought about each subsequent conversation after that moment a year ago.
Steve just smiled. "Yeah."
Kat grabbed each side of Steve's face, pulling him to her for another kiss.
Steve kissed back, now with a complete shift in energy amidst this new knowledge.
After only a few seconds, Kat pulled away again. "How long?" she asked, her hands still on Steve's cheeks.
He understood exactly what Kat meant without explanation. "Two years," he answered immediately, like the words had been on the tip of his tongue for all that time.
Two years ago, Kat wouldn't have cared if Steve walked off the edge of the Earth, and he was in love with her.
"I'm so stupid," Kat breathed out, leaning back in to kiss him again.
"You hated me," Steve managed to say between kisses. "I didn't care." His hands slid down Kat's back and politely rested on her butt. "I would've done anything. Gotten straight A's, learned French, joined student council, whatever it took."
Kat looked into Steve's eyes, unable to comprehend how she ever hated somebody this perfect. "I love you," she said. "So much."
Steve smiled widely. That was the first time she had said that. The L word. "I love you too," he responded. "So much."
Kat planted a kiss on Steve's cheek and rested her head on his shoulder.
They enjoyed the silence for about five minutes, just soaking up each other's presence.
Until Steve said almost out of nowhere: "Do you want to be my girlfriend? Like, officially?" he paused for a moment. "Henderson is starting to ask questions, and he's a loud mouth, so..."
Kat must've been silent for too long.
"If you want to, I don't know, stay casual, that's fine—I-I just figured that since we—"
Kat shot up to a sitting position. "No!" she shouted. Her hands flew over her mouth. "I mean not no!" Kat quickly corrected herself. "Yes," she finally said, finding the right words. "I would love to be your girlfriend."
Steve attacked Kat with a bear hug, making them fall to the side and almost roll off the couch. Steve caught them before they did, though.
They stayed like that for a while, bodies pressed close, their breathing steady.
The boyfriend and girlfriend eventually drifted off to sleep, arms wrapped tightly around each other.
