˗ˏˋ ★ ˎˊ˗ Kat and Nancy immediately locked eyes. Kat tightened her jaw, Nancy's eyebrows formed a line.

They both knew what they needed to do.

"We will," Kat said, taking the gun off of her shoulder and fitting it into her hands like puzzle pieces.

Steve's face began to crumple. He took a step forward, shaking his head. He opened his mouth to object, but Kat didn't let him get a word in.

"Keep them safe," she told him, grabbing his hand and giving it three fast squeezes.

Steve nodded despite his eyes glossing over.

Kat turned, running to join Nancy where she was standing a few yards away.

Once they were set, the girls shot their rifles at the Mind Flayer, instantly turning its attention to them.

Kat turned around and locked eyes with Steve, who wasn't trying to hide his tears at this point.

Kat didn't falter at that, though. She drew her eyebrows together. "Go!" she shouted over the Mjnd Flayer's roars. They all just stood there for a moment. "Go!" Kat shouted again, this time louder.

They finally went, heading to separate parts of the cliff.

Kat stayed looking at Steve for a second longer, watching him and Dustin sprint away. She tightened her jaw, determination growing.

Again, Kat and Nancy shot at the Mind Flayer, who was now taking pounding steps closer to them.

Once the steps grew faster, that was their cue to lead it towards the cliff.
