Rose on Fire

Chapter 71

(Johanna POV)
I wake up freezing, the morning dew drops frozen. The fox is curled up in a tight ball next to me. I get out of the makeshift shelter I made, and look up at the dark gray sky's, it with probably rain or snow today. I tie the fox to a tree, and pick up my ax. I cut small half circles into half the logs I have. I go out to the woods, and find a few very large leaves. I go back to the pond, and fill one of the leaves with some water, I drink some and then carry the rest back to the fox. She laps up the rest, and I go back into the woods to look for food. I find a blackberry bush which I pick clean, I come back with half a leaf full and set it on the ground out of reach of Revolver. I then grab my spear, and quickly catch a small fish. I throw it at Revolver, and start stacking the logs to make a cube shelter. I put leaves on the roof to catch any rain, and start weaving pine needles. I snack on blackberries as I weave a carpet for the shelter. I only get about halfway done when I realize it's almost dark. I go back to the edge of the sound, roll up my jeans, and slowly creep deeper, about up to my knees. I spear a salmon, these waters are just full of them. I clean the fish quickly and build a fire. The fire starts, it' small, so I wait for it to build, as I do I grab a fallen branch and cut off what I don't need, making it a nice straight post. I use the side of my ax to nail it into the ground inside the shelter. I let the fox eat some of the stuff I cleaned out before letting him inside the tent and tying her to the post. I cook the fish and eat what I can before letting her eat the rest. I use the fires light to continue making my carpet out of woven pine needles. It's pretty late by the time I finish, I tiredly lay out the carpet, using the ax to make way for the post Revolver is tied to. I dig up a pile of dirt, and lay the carpet over it to elevate my head like a pillow, and fall asleep happy with my good work.
