Rebekah felt both envy and love.
Envious that she didn't have what they had, and love for the beautiful lives they have created.
Rebekah had watched her brother ruin lives rather than create them, and as she watched his face soften as he gazed at little Elias and Eliana, she felt both awe and incredulity.
When Eva had appeared, she'd made him more human. Her strength and acceptance made him less paranoid. For that, Rebekah would always be grateful. If not, she could just imagine what kind of life she'd be living. A thousand years of spontaneous daggering when he felt like she loved someone other than family proved that.
The guests were both suspicious and fearful; she could feel the prying eyes on the twins as the members of the New Orleans supernatural community mingled and danced.
But this was Nik's way of sending a message, and Rebekah understood. They had nothing to fear and, showing that would already deter many.
Taking her eye off the new parents, Rebekah looked towards Elijah, noble Elijah who had been far too silent since the twins' birth.
Like Niklaus, he'd changed too; he was far less concerned with their family, or specifically Nik's redemption, since he'd been allowed to love without the looming threat that is their brother.
But at that moment, Rebekah knew Elijah knew what it was like to be envious.
She knew, she knew that it was not malicious, just like her, she knew he loved the twins as much as Nik would, but it did not erase the fact that they were not his.
They were very old vampires; possessiveness and jealousy practically defined their baser instincts, along with the insatiable need to feast on blood.
She just hoped Elijah would be able to accept the gift that was right in front of him, for she was not fortunate enough for even that.
"What are you thinking?" Barak's voice interrupted her musings, making Rebekah turn to him, an involuntary smile taking over her face at the sight of her love.
The warrior's face softened, leaning down, he kissed her. Lips moving slowly as he said hello.
"I'm worried about Elijah." She whispered, motioning her head towards Eva and Nik.
And Barak understood what she was anxious about.
"I wouldn't worry too much. Be it Elijah, Damon, or Stefan, their love for Eva eclipses anything, and these two children will not be any different. And Eva will not let anything happen." He assured her, and Rebekah sighed in his embrace, hoping that it would be so.
...
Eva joined Caroline while Nik and Elijah whisked away their babies to show off. And Niklaus had been unusually joyful ever since the twins' birth, and the whole city was witnessing it today.
Smiling as she watched the brothers fuss over the twins, likely weaving stories of royalty and lesser beings. And it was not long before Damon and Stefan joined the two, the four huddled together looking at the two little ones with besotted expressions.
"They are going to be so spoiled!" Caroline exclaimed beside her, fondly witnessing the same scene.
"And I am going to be their villainous mother." Eva sighed, already envisioning the role she had to play.
With four fathers who seemed intent on giving anything they ever wished for, her little darlings were destined to have a strict mother, and she could only hope that she had the strength to remain stern upon their angelic faces.
Just then, their piercing cries sounded, making Eva hurry to them. Upon arriving, she pushed the four males, "Alright, alright, it's time for a nap, and Elijah, bring Elias upstairs, and you three continue to enjoy the party," Eva ordered before walking away, bringing the wailing Eliana with her.
