Two Hours Earlier.
"Peni Parker picked a peck of pickled peppers. If Peni Parker picked a peck of pickled peppers..."
The axe came down.
"...where's the peck of pickled peppers Peni Parker picked?"
It never reached Peni.
The metal head shattered in Chui's hands, breaking apart into a cloud of jagged fragments that scattered across the hospital floor.
Chui remained frozen above Peni, both hands still wrapped around the wooden handle. The smile carved across her face twitched, struggling to understand why the weapon had disappeared.
Around her, the Faceless stopped laughing.
Every head in the lobby turned toward the entrance.
Someone stood beyond the broken glass doors.
A long cloak concealed most of their body, its hood hanging low enough to hide their face. Rainwater dripped from the dark fabric and gathered around their boots. They had entered without drawing attention, yet the air around them carried a pressure that made the loose metal across the lobby tremble.
The Faceless stared.
Some tilted their heads.
Others jerked sharply, bodies twitching against Chameleon's control as dozens of borrowed minds tried to process the new arrival at once.
The cloaked figure lifted one hand.
Behind them, the pieces of the axe rose from the floor.
Metal fragments rotated through the air, scraping against one another as they returned to shape. The axe head rebuilt itself piece by piece, locking around a twisted strip of steel that replaced the broken handle.
One of the Faceless lunged from behind.
The figure caught the reconstructed axe without looking.
The blade turned in their hand and blocked the attacker's strike. Before the Faceless could recover, the stranger grabbed them by the mask and drove their head into the nearest wall.
The plaster cracked.
The Faceless dropped.
That was enough to trigger the others.
They charged as one.
Doctors, nurses, patients, and visitors rushed across the lobby in a hungry swarm. Some crawled over overturned furniture. Others vaulted the reception desk. Their movements were uneven, frantic, bodies pushed beyond natural limits by the masks attached to their faces.
The cloaked figure stepped forward.
The axe left their hand.
It spun once through the air, then shattered again.
Metal fragments scattered across the lobby in a controlled burst. They struck knees, shoulders, wrists, and ribs, hitting with enough force to throw the first wave of Faceless backward without cutting through them.
Several crashed into the walls.
Others were knocked across the tiled floor.
The stranger continued walking.
A row of metal chairs ripped themselves apart behind them. Screws tore free. Steel frames bent and flattened. Medical trays, door hinges, railings, and broken equipment lifted into the air and joined the growing storm of metal surrounding the figure.
