Jungkook stayed at the restaurant a lot longer than he had hoped, for a while he mindlessly watched Taehyung's drink without a moving, he was only snapped out of his trance by a loud noise, he turned to look and it appeared a guest had dropped a vase, there was now a bit of commotion going on.
Jungkook asked for the bill and left, he left his drink untouched.
Once he was outside he wondered what he should do, he didn't expect to spend the whole day with Taehyung but he assumed they might be at the restaurant for a least an hour.
He looked at the wrapped canvas he had with him, he hoped that would be something they might talk about. He had spent the past week working on it, he figured he can gift it to Taehyung to show his gratitude, Haneul insisted on helping and he allowed her to draw a heart at the bottom corner, now he was reconsidering if he should still give it to him.
He was about to call for a ride when he received a text, it was Baekhyung.
"Hi, how are you?" it read.
Jungkook realised he had not thought about what Baekhyung told him while he was at the hospital, Baekhyung liked him and he is expecting an answer to his confession.
"I am alright, how are you?" Jungkook texted back
"I am doing fine as well, how is your foot?"
"All good now, I can even walk on it"
"That's great-"
"Are you free to meet up for coffee?" Jungkook asked before Baekhyung finished typing, "yes sure, when?" , Jungkook proceeded to give him the details about where they could meet, it was about fifteen minutes away from where he was.
Jungkook managed to get a car within five minutes.
In the back seat, he thought about how to tell Baekhyung, he didn't know him that well, but from their interactions he seemed like a nice person. So why not say yes and go out with him, Jungkook asked himself, he could get to know him better and they might be very compatible. They are both interested on art, he is good looking and there's still a lot about him that he is yet to learn.
Jungkook let out a breath in annoyance, this was all true, and there was more good qualities about Baekhyung, but none of it mattered because he didn't feel the same way and he knew it, and it wasn't time that he needed to be sure, there was no amount of time he could take that would make his feelings change.
Suddenly the car came to a stop and the driver announced that they had arrived, Jungkook thanked the driver and got out.
As he was walking towards the cafe, he wasn't too surprised to see that Baekhyung was already there.
He waved to him as he walked through the door.
"When did you get here?" Jungkook asked
"About ten minutes ago, I wasn't too far from here when you called" Baekhyung explained
"O, okay, have you ordered anything?" Jungkook asked as he took a seat.
"No, I was waiting for you" Baekhyung replied handing Jungkook a menu.
Jungkook scanned the menu for a moment and decided on just getting a glass of water, he didn't want to take up too much of Baekhyung 's time.
"I am glad you are all better now"
"Thank you"
"I have been meaning to apologise, for kind of laying all that on you while you were still in the hospital" Baekhyung confessed
"No, it's- it's okay" Jungkook replied
"No, I shouldn't have, it was an impulsive action, and I was wrong for that and I am sorry" Baekhyung apologised.
"Okay, apology accepted" Jungkook replied with a small smile.
The waitress brought their drinks.
They were silent for a moment.
"I also have something to tell you" Jungkook said, Baekhyung sat up straight to fix his posture, he could feel his palms begin to sweat. Part of him wanted to tell Jungkook not to say anything for them to remain in this moment in time where he didn't know what his answer would be and he could simply comfort himself with wishful thinking that Jungkook liked him too.
"I thought about what you said, and I am sorry but I don't feel the same way" Jungkook finally said.
He didn't want to be misleading by saying anything else other than how he felt, he didn't want to give him false hope only to crush it seconds later.
Baekhyung gave a small pressed smile.
"Thank you for not telling me I am a great guy or anything along those lines" he said with a small laugh, Jungkook smiled back a little.
They were quite for a moment, Jungkook didn't know what else to say and Baekhyung thought he prepared himself well enough for any answer Jungkook might give him, but he didn't expect it to hurt this much.
"I hope we can still be friends" Baekhyung said tilting his head to the side as he looked at Jungkook, "o, yes of course, why wouldn't we be-" Jungkook replied a little bit surprised.
"I am sure you can tell this is not the news I was expecting" Baekhyung said with a small laugh, "so I think I should get going, I need to pick up some ice-cream so heal my broken heart",
"I am really sorry" Jungkook said feeling remorseful .
"Can you do me a small favour that might cheer me up" Baekhyung asked, "yes of course, anything" Jungkook said, ready to do anything to help cheer him up.
"Give me a warm hug to send me off" Baekhyung requested, Jungkook was surprised by the request, but if would cheer him up then why not.
They both stood up, Baekhyung was taller than Jungkook, he had to lean down a little for Jungkook's arms to reach his neck.
He buried his face in the crook of Jungkook's neck and took a deep breath, he quickly realised this might not have been the best idea because he didn't want to ever let go, so he hugged him a little bit tighter and a little longer than he planned. In that moment, with Jungkook's arms around him he didn't want it to end.
But he felt Jungkook slowly begin to loosen his hold on him and he knew he had to let go too, but he held onto Jungkook's hand for a moment.
"thank you"
"it was the least I could do"
After one last glance, Baekhyung walked out of the cafe. Jungkook sat back down. He did feel a bit sad for Baekhyung, but more than that he was glad that they got through with it.
From a across the road Taehyung watched Baekhyung exist the cafe. He recognised him, he was the same person he met in Jungkook's hospital room.
He did not plan to stand and look, but he found himself unable to move when he saw Baekhyung wrap his arms around the small of Jungkook's back, he followed every single one of Jungkook's movements, how he was closely pressed against Baekhyung, how his arms were around his neck and how Baekhyung buried his head in the crook of Jungkook's neck.
He could almost not tell if the hug really lasted long or he was imaging it, but seeing Jungkook embrace someone else in that manner made him feel like a fool for ever thinking that Jungkook still had any lingering feelings for him. He looked at Jungkook still sitting in the cafe and finally walked away.
Jungkook looked out the window and he was almost certain he saw Taehyung. "I must be going crazy" he mumbled to himself.
