Wanting A Baby

I felt as if I was constantly being surrounded by babies. Wherever I went out there were too many around for me to count. For the past few weeks I have been wanting to have a baby but I wasn't sure if that was what Shawn wanted. Shawn and I have been married for two years, and we still haven't discussed having a baby Mendes. I knew that he wanted kids but I wasn't sure of when he wanted them. His career has been so busy lately that I wasn't even sure if he was ready for that yet.

I walked over to the kitchen island and grabbed the stack of bills that were placed there earlier. I took them with me into the living room where I took a seat on the couch. I began to look through them, searching for the ones that read my name. One of the sealed envelopes fell from my hands and dropped on my lap. I put the other bills down beside me on the next couch cushion before picking it up. It wasn't a bill, it was a light blue envelope with my name and our address on it. I opened it with curiosity.

It was an invitation that read 'It's a boy!' I opened the card and began to read it. I then realized that the invitation was to a friend's baby shower. She has been married for less then a year and she's pregnant before me. There were cute designs of baby bottles and pacifiers on the invitation. It warmed my heart but made me sad at the same time. I decided then that I was going to bring up having a baby with Shawn today. I wanted a baby Mendes.

I had dinner finished by the time Shawn got home. Just as I was setting the table he had walked in with his cell phone to his ear.
"Alright." He mumbled, replying to whoever he was on the phone with. He walked over to me with a large smile on his face. He leaned down and placed a quick kiss on my cheek before returning to his phone call.
"No, New York this weekend sounds great." He said as he tried to remove his sweater off of his body while having a phone pressed to his ear.
"I'll ask her. Alright, bye." Was the last words he said before hanging up the phone.

"You're going to New York this weekend?" I asked, placing food on our plates.
"Yeah," Shawn answered, "and Andrew wants to know if you want to come too?" He asked, hanging his sweater behind his chair. I placed our plates on the table before sitting down across from where he was sitting.
"Sure." I replied, picking up my fork.
"So how was work?" I asked a minute later, picking at my food.
"Really busy. There is so much I have to do in the next couple of months." Shawn replied before taking a bite of his food. I just nodded my head as I tried to process all the little thoughts in my mind.

"Uh, I got an invitation in the mail today." I said, trying to steer this conversation in the direction I wanted it to go.
"Oh yeah, for what?" Shawn asked taking another bite of his food.
"A baby shower." I said, emphasizing the key word.
"For who?" He asked.
"A friend from work." I replied. Shawn just nodded his head.
"This is great by the way." He said, pointing at his plate of food. I mentally rolled my eyes at how oblivious he was. I smiled before replying.
"Thanks."

After dinner we went for a walk in the cold November weather. Our hands were entwined the whole time as we walked. We reached a near by park that we came to regularly and went to sit on our bench. The bench was right across from a playground, a playground that was filled with young kids. A smile rose to my face as I watched the little ones play. I imagined Shawn and I sitting on this bench, watching our son or daughter run around. It brought me joy.

Then a woman who looked a few years older than me passed by us with a baby in a stroller.
"Y/N." Shawn mumbled, bringing me out of my stare.
"Are you alright?" He asked, placing a hand on my thigh. I repeatedly blinked, and nodded my head before replying.
"Yeah, I was just thinking." I mumbled.
"About what?" He asked.

I all of a sudden became nervous. I think I was scared to hear the answer he would give me if I asked, because if he didn't want what I wanted that would cause a problem between us. I wanted a baby now and I truthfully didn't want to wait any longer than we already have.
"Uh, well, I know you are busy and all with your job, especially in the last two years... But you know, we've been married for two years and I just think that... Well I think-" Shawn began to laugh, stopping me from continuing further.
"Y/N, you're rambling. Just tell me what you want." He chuckled. I couldn't look at him as I responded, so I stared at the playground and the running children instead.
"I want a baby." I mumbled, the words quietly leaving my lips.

I turned my head to look at Shawn, unsure if he had heard me, as he still had yet to respond. He heard, as his gaze was solely on me. Thought was written across his face. Eventually, he found his words.
"You want a baby, I'll get you a baby," Shawn said, beginning to look around the park. "Which one do you want?" He asked, a playful smirk pulling at the corners of his lips.
"Shawn!" I whined, hitting him across the arm. All he did was laugh. "I'm being serious." I mumbled, causing Shawn to take this seriously now.
"A baby," Shawn began, thinking through his words, "A baby is a lot of responsibility." Shawn reached for my left hand. He twirled my wedding ring around my finger, thought still evident across his face.
"I know," I responded, "but I'm ready." I looked Shawn over again, trying to figure out where his head was at. "Do you... not want one?" I asked fearful, with sadness evident in my voice. Shawn looked up, making eye contact with me.

"You know, I've been so busy that I haven't really thought about it." Shawn replied. "I know that I want a baby with you." He said, emphasizing the want, while entwining his fingers with mine. I wasn't sure what he was going to say next, eager, I tried to search for the answer within his eyes.
"I'm going to try rearranging my schedule," he began, "This way I am less busy, and we'll have more time for life." Shawn said with a smile.
"If you really want a baby, lets have a baby." He said, causing the largest smile to stretch across my face.
"Really?" I asked, full of joy. Shawn nodded in response, chuckling at my obvious excitement.
"I love you!" I said, before crashing my lips on to his. Shawn pulled away from the kiss with yet again another chuckle, before replying.
"I love you too, baby."
