After One Long Year

It was while I was waiting in a line at a Starbucks that I saw him again, after one long year. I expected to see him around the city when he was back home from his other life, being a celebrity, but I hadn't, for a whole year. I hadn't even planned on going out, but my friends gave me no other choice.

I pulled open the door to Starbucks, taking in its familiar scent as I walked in. My friends wanted to check out a boutique down the street that I had no interest in going too, so I told them to meet me at this Starbucks when they were done. I walked towards the back of the coffee shop to get a spot to sit. I had passed a lot of empty tables, which was unusual for this Starbucks. Though it was a long weekend, so it made sense that it wasn't as busy as it usually was.

I decided on a table that was near the window. I placed the strap of my shoulder bag over the back of my chair before sitting down. I sighed as I looked around the all too familiar shop that brought back so many memories and emotions. My eyes skimmed over the tables until it rested on one in particular that brought back the majority of memories and emotions of my past. The table was empty, and it wasn't far from where I sat.

I hardly thought about him, but when I found myself sitting in one of our places alone, I couldn't help it. This was a place we came to a lot, if we weren't at Tim Hortons, but this was also where Shawn and I had ended things. As I stared out the window, watching people walk by under the cold cloudy sky, I couldn't help but zone out and revisit the dreadful day.

Sitting in Starbucks on a cold November evening, I sat across from Shawn at our usual table. I held a vanilla latte in my hands, and he had a muffin that he had put to the side. The heat from my drink warmed my cold hands through the paper cup as I stared blankly at its lid. I knew why Shawn had asked me to meet him.

"Shawn," I said cutting through our silence, annoyance evident in my voice, "can you just get this over and done with so I can go home?" I asked, sadness starting to replace the annoyance in my voice.
"This isn't something you just 'get over and done with' Y/N, I care about you. I don't want to hurt you." Shawn replied, crossing his arms on the table.
"We'll, if this is going where I assume it is Shawn, I'm going to hurt. No matter how nicely you put it." I said, combing my hair back, away from my face, with my fingers.

Shawn sighed before speaking up again.
"My career is taking off Y/N, and my schedule is getting busier by the day. I'm starting to travel a lot now." Shawn mumbled, looking at me with a smile on his face. I was happy for him and the amount of success he was gaining, but a tiny part of me couldn't help but wish that he had never gotten the opportunity to get to where he is now. It was selfish of me but it was breaking our relationship. Shawn continued, seeing as I wasn't planning on saying anything at the moment.

"Y/N, I'm going to be gone a lot. Andrew was saying that I'd be traveling for months before coming back home and doing it all over again. You deserve a boyfriend who has all the time in the world for you, and I can't give you that." Shawn said, looking from my eyes to my hands that were entwined on the surface of the table.
"I could tell you to wait around for me or that I'll come and see you once every month or two, but I can't just keep you for my own selfish reasons." He sighed.

He reached out one of his hands and grabbed one of mine, but I pulled it out of his grasp. I was upset that he was doing this to me, to us. I felt in that moment that I had meant nothing to him, after the two years we had been together. Shawn sighed again, and looked to the left. I watched his eyes skim across the room before they landed back on mine. I averted my gaze to his muffin that still sat on the plate, untouched. I was surprised that it had been sitting there for as long as it had, for Shawn usually devoured it as soon as we got to our table. I wanted to smash the muffin in his face, that was how upset I was. Though since he had a love for muffins, he probably wouldn't mind that.

I lifted my latte that was close to empty now and took the last sip of its contents. I placed the cup down before getting up, causing Shawn to look surprised that I was leaving already.
"Y/N." Shawn mumbled as he stood up. I spoke up before he could continue.
"I get it Shawn, we just broke up. Have a great career, I wish you all the best." I said, gathering my things. "Y/N," Shawn said again, grabbing my arm this time to stop me from leaving, "this is hard for me, just as much as it is for you." He replied.

Tears began to build up in his eyes, and that caused a sudden emotion of sadness to rush through my body. Tears began to form in my eyes. I sighed and wrapped my arms around him, and he placed his tightly around me.
"I love you." He mumbled against my ear. I pulled away from our embrace and looked at him with a small smile. I leaned up on my toes and placed a quick kiss near the corner of his lips.
"I love you too." I replied, before turning away and never looking back.

I was pulled out of my memory when I heard the clattering off mugs. I rapidly blinked, regaining my vision of the atmosphere through the window. A tear fell down my cheek from doing so. I hadn't even realized that I was getting teary-eyed, but turns out I had. I wiped the tear away before going into my bag to grab my wallet. I then got into the small line at the counter to order.

I was going to get a vanilla latte but decided against it after the trip I took down memory lane, so I decided to get something else instead. I was the next in line to order when the bell at the door had caused me to look back at the entrance. I looked back in front of me, thinking nothing of the couple who had just walked in until I had realized that I knew one of them. I looked back and couldn't believe my eyes, it was him.

His eyes hadn't met mine yet, likely because they were fixated on a girl he had his arm around. She laughed and he wore a large grin on his face. I gulped, not sure what emotion I was feeling at the moment.
"Next!" Called out one of the Starbucks workers, waiting to take my order. I looked away from my Ex and whoever that girl was and quickly walked over to the counter to order my drink.

Our eyes had made contact when I was making my way back to my table with a latte in hand. I looked to see if he was looking and he just happened to look up towards me. He did a double take and I looked away. I was beginning to feel awkward now that we both knew of each others existence in the shop. I sat down looking as if his presence with that girl didn't faze me, even though it did. I took off the lid from my coffee cup and stared into it, noticing the design that the barista had made on the surface of my latte. It was a heart, perfect for the occasion! I thought sarcastically. The clearing of a throat made me look up in front of me. I gulped at who I saw before me.
"Hey." Shawn said, resting against the chair across from me.

My eyes looked over to the girl he had walked in with, she wasn't paying any attention to us and instead was waiting for whatever they had ordered. I looked back over at Shawn causing my heart rate to increase. I cleared my throat before replying.
"Hey." I replied, not being able to stare into his eyes for a long period of time.
"How are you?" He asked with a smile, "It's been a while."
I nodded my head in agreement.
"It's been a year." I replied, looking down at my latte and then back at him.
"I'm alright. How are you?" I asked, apart of me wanting to know and the other part of me not.
"I'm great actually." He replied with another smile.

Shawn looked back at the girl he had walked in with when she had called him and then he turned to look back at me.
"Well, I got to get going." He said. I nodded my head, just wanting him to leave.
"It was nice seeing you." He mumbled with sincerity in his eyes.
"You too Shawn." I replied with a small smile before he turned away from me and walked up to who I assumed was his girlfriend. He grabbed a coffee cup from her and then placed one of his arms over her shoulders. He looked back at me one last time before they both walked through the door.

I couldn't help but watch them as they walked past the window. Their arms were wrapped around one another and they were laughing. That's how Shawn and I used to be. I looked back down at my latte to see that the heart design had split in half. I sighed as I stared into the steaming beverage. I was never going to get over him, not even after one long year.
