"Shh." I mumbled, looking back at my husband Shawn before we crept into our five year old's bedroom. I pushed the partially opened bedroom door back, giving Shawn and I just enough room to walk through. One of my hands was behind my back, my fingers laced with Shawn's as he crept closely behind me. My eyes rested on our little boy Liam, a replica of Shawn, still asleep in his bed. He was tangled in the bed sheets and his hair was a tousled mess. A small smile pulled at the corners of my lips and I couldn't help but chuckle to myself.
"I almost don't want to wake him." Shawn whispered, causing me to look back at him. I nodded in agreement before turning my head to look back at Liam.

Sunlight poured into Liam's bedroom window, reminding us that it was early morning and the very first day of kindergarten. I pulled my hand from Shawn's grasp and went to sit on the side of Liam's bed. The side of Liam's face sunk into the pillow, and he was breathing from his pursed lips. He looked so peaceful that I did not want to wake him. Shawn stood at the foot of the bed, his hands resting in the pockets of his jeans. I looked over at him and noticed the large smile that pulled at the corners of his lips as he stared at our son. Shawn's eyes averted to my own and he nodded, signalling for me to wake him up. I looked back at a sleeping Liam and placed one of my hands on his back, rubbing it for him to awake.

"Liam... It's time to wake up Baby. It's your first day of kindergarten." I said, patting his back now. Liam's eyes fluttered open, his long eyelashes imitating the wings of a butterfly. He began to stir and tiredly groaned. Shawn walked over to the other side of the bed and pulled the covers back.
"Come on Buddy, you don't want to be late for your first day!" Shawn said.
"Daddy, I'm sleeping." Liam replied, keeping his eyes shut tightly.
"No your not." Shawn chuckled, lifting Liam off of the bed and placing him over his shoulder. Liam erupted into a fit of laughter, causing me to smile, as Shawn carried him like that towards the bathroom.
"Let's go get you ready for school." He said, and I got up from Liam's bed and followed behind them.

After getting Liam ready and making sure that he had something to eat, all three of us got into the Jeep. I sat in the passenger seat, gazing out the window as Shawn drove towards Liam's elementary school. Looking down at Liam's Lego backpack that rested on my lap a thought pondered across my mind, my baby was starting kindergarten. An emotion of sadness washed over me, time really was flying by quick. I pushed my emotion aside and looked back at Liam who sat in his car seat, gazing out the window.

"Baby, are you excited?" I asked, causing him to look over at me.
"Mhm" Liam mumbled, lacking excitement. I could tell that he was nervous and a little scared. Truth was, he was not the only one who was feeling like that. Before Liam had to go to school I took care of him everyday, so we were used to each other's company throughout the day. We always had each other. Looking at Liam, I began to wonder whether he was ready for schooling just yet. Maybe Shawn and I should have waited another year. I caught myself over reacting and threw my thoughts away. Liam was going to be fine, he would get used to this new routine... And so would I.

"You're going to like kindergarten Liam... You're going to have a lot of fun! You're going to make friends so you can invite them over to play, and you're going to impress everyone because you know all of your ABC's!" I said, trying to get Liam excited. His facial expression did not change, it only remained the same. He turned his head and looked back out the window. I turned back around and looked over at Shawn. Liam's sadness unsettled me, causing me to reach over and grab Shawn's hand that wasn't on the steering wheel. Shawn looked over at me and laced his fingers with mine. He glanced at Liam through the reflection in the rearview mirror quickly before having to look back at the road. Shawn's thumb brushed against my hand for comfort.

"Hey, Liam?" Shawn called, looking at him from the reflection in the rearview mirror. Liam turned his head.
"You're going to be a big boy, right? You're not going to cry?" Shawn asked. I turned my body to looked back at Liam. He hesitated but didn't respond.
"What did Daddy promise you if you were a big boy and didn't cry when we got to kindergarten?" Shawn asked, stopping at a red light. It took Liam a moment to answer.
"Ice cream and Lego." He replied, a small smile creeping across his lips.
"That's right." Shawn chuckled, stepping on the gas as the light turned green.
"And you know what Buddy?" Shawn asked, turning down the street on which the school was located.
"What?" He asked, with curiosity in his eyes.
"I bet they have Lego for you to play with in Kindergarten." Shawn said. Liam's eyes lit up, causing a smile to form on my face. I turned my body back around and leaned over towards Shawn. I placed a quick kiss on his cheek, grateful that he could cheer Liam up.
