Grocery Shopping

I walked into the grocery store with not only the sound of the rattling shopping cart behind me, but with the loud laughter coming from my four year old daughter Aubrey. After walking through the sliding automatic doors of the store, I turned my head to see Aubrey's small figure sitting in the cart but not being able to keep her balance within it. Her hands clutched onto the sides of the shopping cart, and still she was laughing uncontrollably, as Shawn pushed the cart past the automatic doors by swerving it side to side. I noticed the large smile on Shawn's face as he listened to our daughter's contagious laughter. Shawn stopped swerving the cart when his eyes met mine, but his own laughter and smile still remained. I smiled back, my heart melting every time he looked at me.

"Daddy, again! Again!" Aubrey laughed aloud, sitting up on her knees within the cart. Shawn looked back at her, taking a moment to think before replying.
"Not now, Princess. Maybe on our way back to the car." He replied.
"Awe!" Aubrey whined, rather loudly. Looking around, I noticed a few heads turn and look our way. "Why?!" She asked.
"Shh, Aubrey. You're being too loud," I said sternly, turning my head back around to look at her. "Daddy already told you, maybe later."
She gave me her pouting face, a face she used almost every time Shawn and I tried to be stern with her. Knowing she would forget why she was even pouting in the next two minutes, I turned my attention onto our two year old son Carter who sat in the child seat in front of the cart.

Upon looking at our son's face, Shawn began to laugh.
"Y/N, come look at Carter." He chuckled, pulling me by the hand to stand next to him at the front of the shopping cart. Looking at Carter's facial expression myself I could not help but laugh too, but I also felt bad for my baby at the same time. As if he had been scared, Carter's face was scrunched up and his eyes were wide.
"Awe," I replied sadly, taking in the startled expression on Carter's face. "Shawn," I chuckled, "You must have scared him while you were swerving the cart." I turned my head, watching Shawn smile down at Carter. Shawn looked back at me, his eyes warming my heart once again. I then looked back at Carter, wanting to cheer him up.
"Carter, did Daddy scare you?" I asked, poking his tummy. This caused a smile to pull at the small corners of his lips.

"Don't worry, I'll fix this." Shawn said, causing me to look back at my husband. Shawn held his hands up in front of him, wiggling his fingers at Carter. Just before Carter could expect it, Shawn began tickling his sides. This sent Carter wailing in laughter, causing even more glances our way.
"Shh Carter," Aubrey said, standing up from behind him. "You're too loud."
Shawn then stopped tickling Carter, causing his laughter to slowly come to an end. With Aubrey still standing behind him, Carter turned his head to look at his big sister. When their eyes met, all Carter did was laugh at her. This made Aubrey shake her head, and then she sat back down in the cart without another word.

As we started down an aisle of the store, I began thinking of the types of foods we had come for. Apples, sliced bread . . . Snacks for daycare, and muffins for Shawn. It all started to come back to me as we continued through the aisles.
Alone, I went to the bakery section of the store to look for sliced bread. A few aisle away, I left Shawn to look for a food item in the aisle I had left him in. Since I was already in the bakery section, after grabbing a bag of sliced bread I looked for the package of muffins. Upon finding them, I heard my second name being called.

"Mommy!" Aubrey called, causing me to turn my head. In her cute summer dress, Aubrey came walking towards me with a large bag in her hands. She held onto the orange bag tightly, both her arms wrapped around it.
"What Baby?" I asked while walking towards her, holding the package of muffins and bag of sliced bread in one arm. I stopped when she reached me, placing my free hand on her head. She looked up at me, before showing me what she held in her hands.
"Can I have this?" Aubrey asked sweetly, wearing a cute grin on her face. She began swaying side to side, adding to the affect. I looked down at the cheezies she held, contemplating my answer. Thinking about it, I remembered buying her a bag of chips last week that had yet to be finished.

I shook my head before replying.
"You still have chips at home that you need to finish, remember?" I replied, beginning to walk and look for Shawn and Carter. I looked back, making sure Aubrey was following behind me. She had a defeated expression on her face and she did not bother asking me again, already knowing that my answer was final. I could not help but feel bad, but at the same time she had to finish what she had at home.
"Mommy will buy you a snack for daycare, okay? You can choose . . . But not the chips." I said, stopping in an aisle upon noticing the canned foods. I looked down at Aubrey, and when our eyes met she nodded her head before running off. I shook my head, beginning to chuckle.
"Aubrey Mendes . . . Where are you going?" I mumbled, more to myself as she turned the corner of the aisle. I figured that she went looking for Shawn, so I left the aisle and did the same.

Aubrey was sitting back in the shopping cart when I found them, and as I approached closer I saw that her cheezies were too. Shawn turned and smiled at me once he realized I was a few feet behind him. He noticed the package of muffins I held and his smile widened, causing me to hold back a chuckle. Shawn walked up to me, grabbing the sliced bread and muffins from my arms.
"Thanks, Babe." He said, placing a quick kiss on my lips. I followed Shawn to the cart where he placed the food items down. I looked down at Aubrey and the chips that she held close to her. It was as if she weren't holding them, I would reach into the cart and take them away.

"I'm guessing Daddy said yes to the chips?" I asked, looking over at Shawn who stood back at the front of the cart. I wasn't surprised, every time I told her no Shawn would cave in and tell her yes. Aubrey was such a Daddy's girl, and because of it I think Shawn had a hard time saying no. Shawn eyes met mine, and a smirk was playing on his lips as he shrugged his shoulders. I shook my head, trying to conceal my smile, and just allowed Aubrey to have the cheezies.

After picking the kids' snacks for daycare, Carter became fussy. He began to whine and flail his body around. "Out!" Carter cried, kicking his dangling feet. Shawn stopped the cart as Carter's cranky mood continued. "Out!" Carter whined again, pushing back against the metal back of his seat. Shawn reached out for Carter and lifted him out of his seat and into his arms. Still, Carter flailed in his embrace.
"Carter . . . Calm down." Shawn said sternly, trying to keep him upright. As tears fell down Carter's face, he stretched his arms out towards me. "Mommy!" He cried, causing Shawn to hand our son over to me.
"Why is he so cranky?" Shawn asked, stepping back in front of the cart. I held Carter against me, rubbing his back in an effort to calm him down. His whining and flailing had stopped, and now only a few tears slid down his face. Carter held onto me tightly as if he didn't want me to let him go any time soon.
"He didn't take a nap today." I responded, before continuing to walk down the aisle.

Carter was okay by the time we made it to the produce section of the store. I placed him back in the kid's seat of the cart, leaving him with Shawn before I went to grab some bananas.
"How many apples do you want?" Shawn asked, pulling up to the different kinds of apples just before I left for the bananas.
"Five?" I replied, shrugging before turning and walking away.

On my way back to the cart, I heard Aubrey's shocked voice. "Carter!" She said, looking up at her little brother from where she sat in the cart. "Daddy, look what Carter's doing!" She tattled, gaining Shawn's attention. Shawn turned around, tying the bag of apples he had filled. My gaze turned on Carter, and I laughed aloud. Carter had reached over and grabbed an apple from one of the boxes, and now he was eating it.
"Carter!" Shawn said, shaking his head but not being able to keep a stern facial expression. He could not hold back the smile that appeared on his face.
"What are you doing?" He asked, tickling Carter's stomach. Carter giggled then raised the apple back to his lips.

After placing the bananas in the cart, I looked up and noticed Shawn smiling over at me.
"Lets make that six apples." He said, before placing the other five apples next to Aubrey in the cart.
