(Shawn's Point of View)

Aaliyah was already standing in the driveway when I pulled up to my parents house. I put the car in park with my trembling hands, shaking with nerves that were getting the best of me. Aaliyah opened the passenger side door and sunlight shone into the car.
"Hey." She said, shutting the car door behind her.
"Hey." I replied, watching her put her seatbelt on.
"Thanks for inviting me." She mumbled.
"No, I'm glad you are coming to help me." I chuckled. She did too.

She then looked up at me after clipping in her seatbelt, a large smile spread on her face.
"Are you nervous?" She asked, her eyes wide in excitement.
"No." I lied, putting the car in drive.
"That's a lie," she called, knowing me so well, "You are shaking like a leaf!" She chuckled.
"Is it that bad?" I asked, turning down the street.
"Gosh, if this is how nervous you get to buy a ring what are you going to be like when you propose? I hope you don't pass out." She laughed.
"I won't." I laughed, shaking my head.

"Are you sure you want to marry, Y/N?" She asked. I turned and looked at her as if she were crazy. Aaliyah rolled her eyes.
"What I mean is, are you sure you are ready to get married?" She asked. I chuckled, understanding what she meant the whole time.
Even though I was shaking uncontrollably with nerves I knew what I wanted. I have been with Y/N for five years and my feelings for her never changed, if anything they got stronger each and everyday. I was one hundred percent certain that I wanted to marry Y/N, I knew from the moment I fell in love with her.
"With Y/N, I'm one hundred percent ready." I replied, a smile tugging at the corners of my lips. When I looked over at Aaliyah she was smiling too.
"What do you think about me proposing to her?" I asked, alternating my gaze from the road to her.
"I love it!" She said, making my smile grow wider.
"Mom and Dad too. We love Y/N." She said. Knowing their opinion meant a lot to me, so I was grateful for Aaliyah's response. It settled my nerves a bit.

A few minutes later Aaliyah spoke up again.
"Did you ask Y/N's family if you could propose?" She asked.
"Of course." I responded, pulling into the parking lot of the jewelry store.
"What did you say? What did they say?" She asked with excitement and curiosity.
"Well, first I told them how much I love her, and then I told them that they would make me the happiest guy in the world if they allowed me to propose." I said, putting the car in park after driving into a parking space.
"Awe." Aaliyah cooed, causing me to chuckle before I continued.
"They seemed really happy that it was me asking to marry her. They gave me a big hug and told me that they would love it if I proposed. Then I thanked them and I promised that I would keep her safe and happy." I said with a smile, recalling the events of that day.
"Awe." She cooed again, making me chuckle yet again.
I jokingly rolled my eyes.
"Come on, let's go!" I said getting out of the car with Aaliyah following behind me.

"Wow, which one are you going to choose?" Aaliyah asked, gazing over the hundreds of rings the store sold.
"Good question." I replied, mesmerized myself.
The truth was that I had no idea what I was doing, that's why I wanted someone to come with me. I knew how to pick out jewelry for birthdays and Christmas, but not for something as big as an engagement. This ring was special and I was giving it to a special girl, so it had to be perfect.
"Hello, were you needing some help today?" A consultant asked, standing on the other side of the glass counters.
"Yes." Aaliyah said before I could. I smiled at her before looking back at the consultant and nodding my head.
"Alright, what are we here for?" She asked.
"Engagement rings." I replied. It felt weird to be asking for help with engagement rings, but it brought me excitement at the same time.
"Alright, and what is your price range?" The consultant asked with a smile, her lips painted with red lipstick.
"I'm not worried about that." I admitted, making the consultant smile even wider.

"Fantastic. So, if you come over here," she said as she walked over to a glass counter not to far from where we were, "We just got a new collection of engagement rings."
We stopped in front of a glass case, and my eyes skimmed over the new rings. They were all gorgeous.
"They are all nice," Aaliyah mentioned, "but how do you know which one to pick?" She asked. The consultant chuckled before replying.
"We usually advise the person purchasing the ring to look over them and see which one catches their eye when they think of their special someone." She said, making it sound so easy.

There were so many different colours, shapes and cuts on the rings. There were some with too few diamonds and others with too many. I didn't know if Y/N would like the squared shape or the round. Maybe she would like the heart shape. Or maybe I was just over thinking.
I began to focus and do what I came here to do, find an engagement ring for the love of my life. I thought about her, her beauty and personality. It was in the moment thinking of those things that my eyes caught a ring in the corner of the case. Aaliyah must have followed my gaze on the ring because she said just what I was thinking out loud.
"That one is beautiful." She said. I nodded my head in agreement.

"Would you like to see that one?" The consultant asked, pointing at it through the glass.
"Yes, please." I replied.
She opened the case with a key and pulled out the box with the ring sitting inside. The ring sparkled when the store's light hit it. Staring at it, a smile formed on my face.
"Can you imagine that on Y/N's finger?" Aaliyah asked, squishing up against me to see the ring herself.
I could imagine it wrapped around her finger. I saw myself getting down on one knee with this ring in the box too. Something inside of me was sure that this was the one.
"What do you think?" I asked Aaliyah. She had no words, she just looked up at me with the biggest grin and nodded her head. I could tell by her face that she thought it was perfect.
"It's a beautiful ring," the consultant said causing me to look over at her. "It's my favourite from all of them." She admitted.
"What do you think?" Aaliyah asked me, causing me to look back at her. I sighed in contentment.
"I think Y/N will love it." I replied.

After sizing, packaging, and purchasing the ring I took Aaliyah out for a late lunch. We discussed ideas on how to propose, some so extravagant that we made each other laugh. I was grateful for her help finding a ring, her ideas and her advice regarding the proposal. I was really glad that I had asked her to come along with me today. After we ate I took Aaliyah home and then drove home myself. After parking in the driveway I decided to hide the ring in the car for now, this way Y/N wouldn't see it when I walked inside. I opened the box that held the ring one last time, admiring its beauty. I smiled and closed the box, content with the choice I had made. I placed the box inside of the glove compartment of the car before getting out and locking the doors.

Y/N was watching television on the couch when I walked into the house.
"Hey Babe," She said, looking back at me from where she sat.
"Did you have fun with the guys?" She asked, believing that I had gone to a hockey game with some friends.
"Yeah." I replied, sitting beside her on the couch. I placed a kiss on her lips, feeling her lips pull in a smile against mine.
"That's good." She said, sitting closer to me and snuggling into my chest. I wrapped one of my arms around her instinctively.
I looked up at the television to see that she was watching an episode of "Say Yes To The Dress", finding it quite ironic. I held the chuckle inside of me, not wanting her to question me about it.

I grabbed her left hand that rested on my leg and entwined her fingers with my own. As her eyes stared at the television mine were stuck on her ring finger, causing this giddy feeling to rush over me. She was oblivious to what I was planning for her, and that made a small smile creep on my face. Little did she know that I had picked out a ring that fit perfectly on that finger.
