"I wish Daddy could come to my music concert." My five year old daughter Amenslie said, sitting in her carseat at the back of the car. I looked at her from the review mirror, noticing her saddened facial expression.
"I know Sweetie, and Daddy would have loved to see you sing! But he's on tour having his own music concert." I replied, looking back and forth between her and the road."It's my first one though." She mumbled, brushing her brunette hair out of her face.
"I know, I'm sorry that he couldn't be here to see you Princess, but Mommy's here!" I said with a large smile at the end of my sentence. She just stared out of the car window without saying a reply. I sighed, feeling sad for her. I always tried my best to keep her happy whenever Shawn had to miss a school play, a holiday, or even her birthday. I knew that it was hard on Shawn too, to not be home when we expected him too."That's my school! We're here Mommy!" She called, excitment evident in her voice.
"I know!" I laughed, parking the car in one of the parking spaces of the school's parking lot.
Just after putting the car in park my cell phone began to ring. I grabbed my phone from the cup holder I had put it in and looked at it's screen. A smile rose to my lips. Shawn was 'facetiming' me.
"Look who's calling baby, it's Daddy." I said, showing her the phone screen for a quick second before answering the call. I saw the large smile that rose to her face as I answered the call."Hello." I answered, seeing Shawn's face take up the room on my screen.
"Hey Babe, what are you doing?" He asked, a smile spread across his face.
"Well, the munchkin and I just got to her school for her concert tonight." I replied, looking back at Amenslie.
"That's good. What time does it start again?" He asked, looking past the phone's camera before looking back at me.
"Seven." I replied. Shawn nodded."Can I speak to our baby for a second?" He asked, fixing one of the earbuds in his ear. I just nodded before handing the phone over to her.
"Daddy wants to talk to you." I whispered.
"Hello." She answered as she rose the phone to her face.
"Hey Muffin." Shawn replied, joy evident in his voice.
"Honey, can you pull the phone back a bit, Daddy can't see your face very well." he chuckled. I reached over, helping pull her hand back so that the phone screen fit her face better.
"There we go." Shawn said happily. Amenslie smiled wide."Are you excited to sing, baby?" Shawn asked.
"Yeah," she replied, "but I'm nervous."
"You're nervous?" Shawn questioned, causing Amenslie to nod. "Daddy still gets nervous sometimes before he goes out on stage, it's okay." He told her, before continuing further. "Do you know what Daddy does when he gets nervous?" Shawn asked, causing Amenslie to shake her head, "He thinks of Mommy."
Shawn's reply caused me to blush, and made me grin wildly like a fool.
Amenslie's smile was the one to falter.
"I wish you were here to watch." She mumbled. Shawn was quiet, likely beating himself up for not being there physically for our daughter. Especially when she wanted or needed him the most.
"I know," Shawn replied, "I wish I was there too."
"Sweetie," I cut in, calling to Amenslie, "We better start going."
"Yeah, Daddy has to get going too." Shawn said through the phone, " Have fun tonight, okay? I want you to be the loudest singer there! Good luck, baby."
"Okay... thank you." Amenslie replied, a saddened expression still obvious across her tiny face.
"I love you." Shawn called to her. Amenslie looked over at me and I gave her the eye to reply back to her Dad. With my stare, she looked right back at the phone.
"I love you." She replied, before handing the phone back to me."Hey." I replied, sighing as a result of my daughter's sadness, lifting the phone in front of me.
"Hey beautiful, I got to go. I love you." He said to me.
"Alright babe, I love you." I replied, before waving him goodbye and letting him end the call.
I put my phone in my jacket pocket and then looked back at Amenslie. She unbuckled herself out of her carseat, hopped out of it and rested against the back of the passenger seat. I noticed her saddened expression once again, causing me to sigh. Nothing I could say would take away the sadness she felt about Shawn not being here."Come here Baby, let me fix the clip in your hair." I said, causing her to move closer to me. She was dressed in a cute dress with a pair of leggings and boots. She looked adorable. I had to remind myself to send Shawn a picture of her outfit later. I fixed the clip in her hair and then looked at her with a smile.
"It's showtime." I said wiggling my fingers in front of her, causing her to laugh.
"Let's go, Baby." I said, turning the car off and getting out of it.It was fifteen minutes past seven when the show was ready to begin. Kindergarten was the first to go up on stage, so that meant Amenslie would be walking across it any second now. I looked around the small gym to see that the room was packed. There were so many smiling faces, gushing at the kids and getting their camera's ready. There were a lot of parents sitting together, pointing at their child on the sidelines. I looked beside me, where I leaned against the wall, feeling alone. I missed Shawn to share this moment with me.
The crowd began to awe as the kindergarten class made their way on stage. Amenslie's eyes looked around the room until they rested on mine. A large smile spread across her face and she waved at me. I chuckled and waved back. Just then the doors of the gym behind me closed with a thud, causing me to look back and see who had walked in. I couldn't believe who my eyes were looking at.
"Shawn?" I questioned in disbelief, leaning off of the wall and walking up to him. His eyes found mine and he smiled wide.
"Surprise!" He said, just before my body collided against his."What are you doing here?" I asked, wrapping my arms around him.
"I couldn't miss my baby's first music concert." Shawn replied, pulling away from my tight embrace and placing his lips on mine. This large amount of joy came over me as I processed the fact that he was really here. Amenslie is going to be ecstatic, I thought to myself. I pulled away from Shawn's kiss to question him.
"Why wouldn't you tell me?" I asked. He chuckled before replying.
"I wanted it to be a surprise." He said. "Am I late?" He asked, a moment after. I shook my head.
"They haven't started yet." I replied."Daddy!" I heard from the stage, being called by an all to familiar voice. I looked behind me to see Amenslie already running towards us. People began to turn their heads, looking at us, likely curious as to why Amenslie had run off stage.
"Hey, Baby girl." Shawn greeted, picking our daughter up in his arms. They both held on to each other so tight.
"You came!" She squealed, with a laugh following.
"Did you really think Daddy would miss your first concert?" Shawn asked. Amenslie shook her head and wrapped her arms around shawn again, causing a few awes to erupt from the crowd around us."Okay, go back on stage. They're waiting for you to start!" I said, just as Shawn placed her back on the ground.
"Okay!" She chuckled, running back towards the stage. When she got back to her spot on stage she started talking to the kids beside her as she pointed at Shawn.
"She's so happy that you're here." I said to Shawn, leaning against him and wrapping my arms around his torso. Shawn placed his arm around my waist.
"How about you?" He asked through his smiling lips. I looked up at him, smiling myself.
"I am incredibly happy." I replied, placing a quick kiss on his cheek.Soon after, the kindergarten class began to sing their first song, causing Shawn and I to turn our shared gaze on to our daughter. Watching her while she preformed, I realized that Amenslie was a natural at entertaining an audience, just like her Daddy. I looked up at Shawn and admired him as he watched Amenslie perform, I could tell that he was proud, and was thinking the same thing.
