"Watch your step, Babe." Shawn warned, stopping to look back at me and reaching out a hand for me to take.
"How, much, further?" I asked out of breath, gasping for air in between each word. I gladly took Shawn's extended hand. With a firm grip on my hand, Shawn helped pull me up over the uneven ground he had warned me about, made up of rock, mud, and grass.
"We're almost there." Shawn replied, stifling a laugh. I looked up at him, having to squint with the sun's light peering through the trees behind him. Beads of sweat covered Shawn's forehead, leaving me only to imagine how I looked in that moment. Despite my insecurities, Shawn looked at me lovingly and reached forward, tenderly tucking a fallen strand of hair behind my ear. While pulling his hand back, I reached for the ponytail at the top of my head, tightening it. Shawn averted his gaze from me onto the backpack he wore, reaching into the side of it and pulling out his water bottle. He handed me his half consumed bottle of water, before turning around and continuing forward. I hastily unscrewed the cap from the bottle, before taking three much needed gulps of water, and following behind him.

I had to pick up my pace to catch up to Shawn, and when I had I spoke up.
"You're not taking me deep into these woods so that you can murder me, are you?" I joked, adjusting the heavy backpack I wore on my back. Shawn laughed as soon as the words left my lips, causing a large smile to spread across my face.
"You did eat the last muffin yesterday, so maybe." He replied, looking back at me over his shoulder. I laughed aloud, not only at his reply but at the apparent grudge he still held over the muffin I had eaten the day before.
"I already apologized," I mumbled, reliving the guilt, "like a million times."
Shawn looked over his shoulder again, looking back at me with a smile adorning his lips. I knew then that I had been forgiven long ago, allowing the feeling of guilt to subside.
"Seriously though, Shawn. Where are you taking me?" I asked, becoming more curious the deeper we ventured into the forest.
"I can't tell you that, it's a surprise!" He said, a smirk now replacing the smile that had adorned his lips only seconds ago. I sighed, unsatisfied with his reply, but couldn't control the smile that was pulling at the corners of my lips. Despite my curiosity, I didn't push further for an answer, knowing that Shawn wouldn't reveal the surprise no matter how hard I tried to get it out of him.

The further we walked into the forest, not only had I become more curious of the surprise, but became more paranoid of what lurked behind the trees. Shawn led the way a few steps ahead of me, and I didn't mind trailing behind him at a slower pace while gazing into all the greenery around us.
The air smelled of fresh pine. Thousands of large pine trees towered over the forest, leaving the sunlight to peek through the trees. The forest was an array of green, and it's ground was covered in pine needles.
While looking into the forest, I noticed a movement in the trees. I stopped in wonder, squinting to see what was behind the pine. Though, the rustling in the tree stopped before I could see anything. Just then, I heard a rustling coming from behind me. I turned around, noticing that there was movement behind a pine tree that was only feet away from me. Not wanting to chance the encounter of whatever was hiding behind that tree, I ran down the trail to catch up to Shawn.

"Shawn," I called, when I had caught up to him. "Are there any animals in this part of the forest?" I asked, reaching for his hand. What I was really asking was, are there any vicious animals in this part of the forest?
Reciprocating my reach for his hand, Shawn entwined his fingers with mine. Shawn couldn't help but laugh, before replying to my question.
"Of course there are." He answered, looking at me with amusement.
"Like, which ones?" I asked, trying to suppress the urge to laugh at myself.
"I don't know," Shawn replied, averting his gaze up ahead. "Birds, squirrels, deer, b-"
"Bunnies?" I interrupted, hoping that was what he was going to say. Shawn laughed aloud, amused all over again.
"That too," he chuckled, "but I was going to say bears."
"Bears?!" I questioned in fright, even though I had considered them a possibility in the back of my mind. With my opposite hand, I clung onto Shawn's arm. Shawn looked back at me, noticing the obvious fear on my facial expression. Despite my fear, he wore a smile.
"Don't worry, Y/N," he reassured, tightening his hold on my hand. "They don't usually go near the trails. They're deeper in the forest."
Shawn leaned in a few inches closer and placed a quick kiss on my cheek, and while pulling away he couldn't help but chuckle again.

"Are you sure that you know where you're going?" I asked a few minutes later, watching Shawn's eyes wander along the trail. I wasn't asking seriously, that is until Shawn began to hesitate.
"Shawn," I began, really hoping that he didn't get us lost. "Do you even know where we are?" I asked, serious this time. Shawn looked at me for a moment, but he didn't answer. Instead, his eyes wandered in thought before he mumbled aloud.
"Were we supposed to make a left? Or a right?" He questioned, leaving me to stare at him with an incredulous look. Shawn's eyes then focussed on mine.
"We're going North, right?" Shawn asked, confusion written across his face. My only thought in that moment was, he did not just get us lost.

"Shawn!" I yelled, "You have got to be kidding me!" I said, slapping him across the chest. Despite the impact to his chest, Shawn began laughing hysterically.
"I am, I am! I'm just kidding!" He admitted hastily, holding his hands out in front of him.
"Yes, I know where we are going." He added, reaching for my hands.
"Why would you do that?" I asked, trying to release my hands from his grasp. Despite my panic moments ago, I couldn't help but laugh, relieved that we were never lost. Shawn wrapped an arm around my shoulders, still chuckling, leading me forward.
"Hey, look a bear!" Shawn joked, pointing into the forest. A sudden rush of fear ran through me, before I realized he was only kidding.
"Stop it!" I yelled, despite my chuckling. I shoved him back, causing him to stumble. Still, despite the shove, he laughed.

Eventually, the subtle sound of trickling water was heard, and it became more audible the further we made our way down the trail.
"Is that water?" I asked, looking at Shawn. Shawn smiled, looking in the direction of the trickling sound.
"That's your surprise," Shawn replied.
"Come on." He said, taking my hand and pulling me forward.
While making our way down the trail, the trickling noise gradually became louder. We turned a left at the end of the trail, walked into the forest and past the trees, ending up in front of a small waterfall.
"Surprise!" Shawn said, extending his opposite hand out towards the waterfall. My jaw dropped at it's beauty, causing Shawn to chuckle.
"My reaction was the same the first time I saw it." Shawn said, referring to my dropped jaw and the waterfall.

It was a never ending flow of water, cascading over the rocks, and falling into a small pool below.
I looked back at Shawn, watching him while he admired the waterfall. He stared at it so intently, making me smile. I couldn't help but think of how cute he looked in that moment. I tightened my grip on his hand, causing him to turn his head and look at me. With his head turned towards me, I hastily leaned forward and crashed my lips on his. I could feel Shawn's lips stretch into a smile against my own.
I pulled away from his lips with a goofy smile adorning mine. Shawn's smile mirrored my own.

Shawn and I sat down on a small boulder, only feet away from the waterfall. We could finally remove the weight of our backpacks from our backs.
"It's beautiful." I mumbled a few moments later, focussing back on the waterfall in front of us.
"Yeah," Shawn nodded, before turning his head and looking at me again. I looked back at him.
"Not as beautiful as you though." He replied, causing a blush to rise to my cheeks. Amused by my blush, Shawn leaned forward, placing a kiss on my flushed cheek.

"Gosh, it's hot." Shawn mumbled, after pulling away from my cheek. I reached into my backpack, grabbing out the water bottle he had given me earlier.
"Not as hot as you though." I replied, suppressing my laughter, while passing him the bottle of water. Shawn laughed at my copied reply, causing my laughter to follow.
After taking a few gulps of water, Shawn reached for the hem of his t-shirt. He pulled the fabric over his head, causing me to blush all over again.
Shawn then stood up, making a few steps towards the falling water.
"Come on." He said, gesturing me to follow. Despite his gesture, I sat back and watched as he continued further towards the waterfall. A smirk rose to my lips, the hike was definitely worth the view.
