Prequel (2) Kyle and Rose

c.1994

Gabriel became a Father just because.

Not because the Knights left and the archangels were doomed to soon participate in Armageddon. Not because they could use something as powerful as a Child to protect Heaven during this time of chaos. But only because millions of years from now, after the Earth had collapsed into the sun and all the souls were sorted in either Heaven or Hell, when people wondered Who ever became the Father of Heaven's Child? Gabriel would swoop in, martini in hand and a charming smile, "Me, Gabriel. Pleasure."

But who was he going to choose?

He flew over the world he'd slowly and silently become obsessed with aimlessly, searching for a soul that stood out. A heart of gold won the audience the easiest, after all.

He wanted to pick the absolute best of the best—and there was only a handful of those kinds of souls left. He wanted someone with a hint of badass and a dash of sass. Someone interesting, someone funny.

And someone caught his eye.

Gabriel swooped in immediately, watching curiously.

"Hey Frank!" The man shouted from across the parking lot, a wide smile on his face, but Gabriel can see the uncontrolled anger in his eyes. "Buddy, let me talk to you for a second!" He swaggered towards Frank, fists clenched and ready. Frank was glaring at him as if he already knew what was coming to him.

"It's none of your business, stay out of it." Frank grumbled despite himself.

"None of my business?" the man guffawed. He dropped his smile suddenly. He grabbed Frank by the collar and shoved him against a car.

"K-Kyle look," Frank tried to keep the fear out of his voice unsuccessfully. "It was an accident! It was an accident! I didn't mean it!."

Kyle nodded understandingly, even giving Frank a sympathetic look. "An accident." He looked as if he was considering the word.

"Yes," Frank hissed.

Kyle's humorless grin was anything but kind. It was gone a second later anyway, as his grip tightened around Frank's collar. He pulled him off the car only to shove him head first into the next one. "Whoops!" Frank managed a weak groan before Kyle pulled him again only to force him to the ground with a kick. "Whoops!" Frank scrambled off his stomach, facing Kyle with a bleeding eyebrow. "What can I say, Frank? Accidents happen!" He was all anger still, nostrils flared and breathing heavy.

"You don't hit your wife, Frank!" Kyle shouted in his face slowly, as if he was talking to a moron. "She takes care of your bastard twins for you while you're out being a drunk idiot. She makes your food, packs your salt bullets, and puts on her eyeliner for you every day. You don't deserve a single look from a woman like Tammy." Kyle turned away and roughly rubbed a hand on his jaw. When he turned back around, his eyes were narrow and shifty like he was doing a whole lot to keep from shooting Frank on the spot.

"I swear, man, I swear, you touch a single golden hair on her head and I will cut your hands off. That's not a warning Frank, and it's not a threat either. It's an honest to god promise." He looked at the man for a second longer before helping him off the floor. "Get up," he smoothed out his shirt for him and slapped him on the back. "You look pale, that's good. It's good. Tammy was shaking when she ran to our house, you know that? Man, she was shaking. Crying, hysterical. Why? Why would you do that?"

"I-It's the alcohol, it's gotten bad." Frank looked at him with honest eyes, hoping to win sympathy.

Kyle spoke back in the same soft whisper like he was consoling a player on the side of the field after a third strike. "No it's not Frank, it's because you're a piece of shit. You're gonna stop drinking. Tonight. I want you sober all week." Kyle poked roughly at Frank's wound, making Frank flinch immediately. "Does that hurt? Good." He wiped his blood stained finger on his clothes. "C'mon," let me stitch that up for you." He clapped a hand that was too heavy to be comforting.

"You buy her a nice gift and apologize, alright?" Kyle ordered. "And I mean nice not a crappy box of chocolate. Like a pretty bracelet or something." Frank nodded obediently.

Gabriel liked Kyle.

But Kyle became the choice when Gabriel followed him with his eyes as he went back into the diner, and a woman greeted him with a kiss.

The woman was with child.

It was perfect. Gabriel's work was already finished.

It was obvious the two had been newly weds. They only grinned at each other, and kept almost no breathing room between themselves. It was sickening.

The wife was foxy.

Gabriel, like the most of us, liked the pretty things. He only went out with the hottest angels and occasionally a stunning human girl spiked his interest. But this woman, if she were put next to the most beautiful angels Gabriel was with, she would've blended in seamlessly. Sure, she just turned thirty, but man she was gorgeous enough to make Gabriel settle down. For a few minutes anyway.

And as fate would have it, she was also a hunter. Her name was Rose and she got married just last May. She couldn't wait to have children.

"Have you considered any names yet?" Gabriel held his cup, about to venture a toast.

Kyle chuckled nervously, "No, not really," he told the charming stranger who interrupted their lunch.

"How does Eliza sound?"

Rose gasped, "That's a beautiful name."

Gabriel nodded. "To Eliza."

"Could be a boy," Kyle told Rose with a smile. His arm was around her, tucking her tightly to his side.

No, Gabriel wanted to tell him, as he watched the happy couple flirt from across the booth. It was going to be a wonderful baby girl.

And she would save us all.
