"What happens next?" Dean asked cautiously, face full of concern.
"I try to kill it but then I hurt Ian instead," I replied, slowly, unwillingly. "He was trying to protect me. He gets hospitalized for a month."
Dean said nothing for a little, but I knew he was watching me closely. I could feel him slowly piece together a new image of me in his head. One that I tried to keep a secret.
"We should leave."
I agreed. Dean looked around a little before he wrapped his arm in the curtain and broke a window. We both climbed out, our feet making silent thuds against the grass.
I turned around immediately when I realized we weren't in my backyard like we were supposed to be. Ahead of us was a clearing blanketed with a night sky. The grass looked like it had a silver shimmer, alight by the glowing moon that hung above us.
"Do you know this place?" Dean asked tensely. He was alert, eyes scanning the clearing like he expected something to jump out and attack.
"Yeah, I have another memory here. It was a bonfire with a few hunters, we should see them if we walk a little that way."
"Is it like the one in there?"
"Uh, more or less."
"Good," he nodded firmly. "Then we walk the opposite way."
We did just that.
As I struggled to keep up with Dean's fast walk, a small part of me was thankful that Dean decided not to see what happened in the clearing.
Soon I realized that even though we were running away from the last memory, we were arriving right into the next one. The grass that was under us was dissolving into the ground as the trees disappeared and buildings and street lights grew in place.
It was still night time but instead of the moon being out, the streets were shined on by the dim lamp lights. All the stores were closed and there wasn't a person in sight. Dean and I were alone until a beat up mustang made a turn into the street, slowing to a stop by the curb. I felt dread build in me quickly. This one was the worst. It was definitely the worst and Dean was going to see all of it.
"What is this?"
"Prom night," I breathed.
I got out of the car. Ian was resting on the hood, taking a cig out.
"Why'd you stop?" My heart was hammering in my chest. I knew something like this was going to happen earlier, but I forced myself to ignore it, to shove the bad feelings aside just for prom night. "We're going to be late."
"We're not going to prom. We need to pull another job, tonight."
"What?!" I was shouting. "We just finished a job a few weeks ago! Tammy's got enough meds to open a freaking drugstore —"
"It's not enough. It's never enough, don't you get it? The cancer isn't just going to go away. We always have to be ready. Besides, we have the perfect opportunity right now. Both our dads and Derek are on a hunt, Jason is out of town. C'mon, chances like this don't come very often."
"But you promised we'd go to prom," I said forcefully, blinking the tears out of my eyes.
"I was never going to go to prom, Lizzy." He rolled his eyes. "It's stupid."
"But I wanted to go with you," I spoke through my teeth.
He kicked himself off the hood and shouted, "Well I wasn't going to GO!" he shouted so loud, his voice echoed throughout the empty street.
