The sun was setting by the time I reached the hospital. This one was almost too easy to find; I left two exorcised ones behind me already.
I was on the hunt for demons. If I was going to find Alec, I needed to find demons. This one killed a few patients. The way they died indicated either demon or spirit; no way for the killer in, no way for the killer out, but there was always signs of struggle.
I climbed off of Sully and almost immediately he was returning to my necklace. There was such a sensitive form of communication between us now. It's like he knew my thoughts before I even had to think one. Effortless, he made it completely effortless.
My heart squeezed when I remembered his burns.
I walked in the hospital unsure of what the plan was. I had a cop badge, but it wasn't mine. It had Dean's picture on it.
"How may I help you?"
She was a middle-aged woman with short red hair and tired eyes. She looked like a no-none sense type of person. Smart.
Still, I kept a straight face and flashed my badge. "Here to follow up on the case."
She stared at me with a flat expression and closed the file in her hands, eyes on me.
"What case?"
"Excuse me?"
"What case?" she repeated again, raising her eyebrows.
"The murder case."
"You got a fake badge, the least you could do is do your research."
"Fake—" I began but she cut me off by shouting.
"Yes it's fake! My husband's a cop, I know a fake badge when I see one. Now I don't know what brand of sicko you are, getting off on this stuff but the people in this hospital are people! They deserve respect—you know what? I'm calling security, I'm not letting this go."
She put her hand on the phone and dialed a number.
"I need security down by the main entrance."
I didn't think twice. I just did what I had to do.
The phone fell from her hands. Face fell slack. Her eyes—bright, ebullient blue.
Two guys dressed in uniform came jogging. I kept my face to the floor and mumbled under my breath. The words I said, she said them too. Her tone was mono and her voice robotic but it was the best I could do.
"We have a runner," I mouthed. She said the words less than half a second after I did. "Just saw him burst through the entrance before I could do anything."
The security moved immediately. The rushed through the doors I came in, not looking at me twice.
To the woman, "Walk in front of me. Take me to the room where the murder happened."
We walked the dull hallways up the stairs, passing by a few staff. I kept my face low and turned the other way, following the woman closely.
We walked through a long hallway. Room after room, patient after patient. Some were rocking, some were humming, others singing, one was drawing. The lights were dimmed and the color of the walls were a bland washed-out blue.
The woman stopped in front of a locked door. She took out her keys and opened it, motioning me to follow her.
I stepped inside and knew I was in the right place immediately—it was the smell of sulfur and the awful negative energy that came with forces from hell. I walked around the room, feeling revolting anger coil in my stomach.
