Sam stared at me and I stared back.In attempt to break the awkward silence, I said as a matter of factly—"I like you more." But he didn't say anything back and looked away. And then I realized that I was wrong before. Now the silence was awkward.
My eyes trailed to the metal cuffs on my wrist, imagining the letters A W K W A R D zooming in and out in my head, flashing in bright neon colors. They were doing the rumba when Dean came back with a bag of Doritos and an open can of beer. He set them on the table in front of Sam and looked at him pointedly. "You didn't eat since yesterday. That's why you fainted just now. Eat."
My eyes widened a bit, but neither of them were looking at me. "I'm not exactly the poster girl for physical fitness, but is this really how you should be eating?"
Dean pulled a chair next to his brother and sat across from me. "Start talking."
I kept a controlled voice, despite feeling impatience tug at me, taunting me. "You know you'd have more friends if you didn't greet everyone with a gun." He continued watching me expressionlessly."I don't even get why you automatically think I'm here to hurt you." I crossed my arms.
"Oh," I anticipated the sarcasm, "So an intruder breaks into your house at three in the morning, shouting like a mental case and wakes you up in the middle of the night, attacks you with blister inducing glitter—"
"You guys really never used this stuff before? So you just prank each other the normal way?"
"This is not at all cute and you need to start talking before I chain you to that pole and go back to bed."
I glared back at him, feeling the last drop of patience I had evaporate. "Not cute, huh?" I spared him the tiniest humorless smile. "Fine," I breathed, straightening up and crossing my arms. "You win, Grinch. What do you want to know."
He stood up and began circling me. "How'd you know all that stuff about Sam just now?" He inched closer, but it was tactical. If I wasn't so paranoid and watchful, I definitely wouldn't have noticed.
I raised my eyebrow. "So you believe me then?"
He shrugged. "I'll decide that on my own time."
"I have a certain power, I guess, that gives me extra sharp senses. When I put my hand on his forehead I felt everything." It was hard putting what I do into words, especially because I could barely explain it to myself. I've also never had to explain it to anyone before.
"For example, if I really concentrated hard enough, I could feel the electric current running through the wires under my feet. And it's the same way with Sam. I just feel stuff, sort of like how you feel a heartbeat or temperature. But I am able to feel everything else too."
Dean looked like he was listening intently, nodding as I was talking. But I knew what he was trying to do. I tried not to move and pretended that I was unaware as he swiftly pulled out his silver knife and cut my arm.
"Not a shapeshifter." I hissed. My blood immediately responded, methodically staining my ripped sleeve. My anger was slowly building, but I was trying to keep it under control. This library was worth it, I just knew it.
Next, he sprayed me with freezing holy water.
I didn't flinch. I just took a long, deep sigh. "If you bothered to check, you would see that I am wearing a silver devil's trap necklace." I spoke through my teeth. "And god, do I even look like a demon to you?"
"Well, you can't really tell until you've tried now, can you?" A small smirk was playing on his lips as he was screwing the flask closed.
"Yes you can. They aren't exactly human." I spat, wiping my face with my sleeve.
