Greg opened the door to his house, rubbing his eyes from sleep. Steven was at the other side, holding in his arms, Sapphire, Ruby, Amethyst, Peridot, and Pearl's gems, all cracked or broken in one way or another.
"Hey dad, can I stay here?" he asked. Greg hurried him in, got him some tissues and worriedly called Connie. She listened to him, from the condition of the cracked gemstones to the emotional breakdown that was Steven.
~A few days later~
"Here have this. Thought you might need it." Greg said, and gave the small belly bag to Steven. He was much better now, his tears gone as he waited for the Crystal Gems to come back. Steven smiled and accepted the gift quickly.
He was so young, and lost so much. It was only a month after his fourteenth birthday, and Greg didn't have the heart to tell him that they wouldn't come back. Despite the fact that Steven probably already knew, he clung onto the slim chance that they might come back.
~A week later~
"Amethyst go clean up your room!" Steven said, imitating Pearl's voice as he played with her gem. He then picked up Amethyst's gem.
"You can't tell me what to do!" he said in a very horribly impression of Amethyst's voice. Greg watched, praying that they would come back.
~A month later (!!)~
Steven was having another emotional breakdown, as unexpected and sudden as the last few. He was fine a fine minutes ago, but as he slowly walked out of his room, he burst into uncontrollable tears and sobbing.
Connie was there, comforting him with hugs and reassuring pats on the back. She looked over at Greg, her eyes filled with concern. Greg looked down at his sandals and shook his head. Connie's eyes filled up with tears, which she quickly wiped away on the back of her hand.
She had to be strong for Steven.
~Ten years later~
"We....are the Crystal Gems......We'll always save the day.....And if you think we can't...We'll always find a...way.....That's why the people of this.....world........believe in.....Garnet...Amethyst.......And Pearl" Steven sang as he cradled Connie's head in his lap. She smile up at him.
"And Steven." she sang the last part of the song with a perfect pitch and died.
